The self is one, the body is made up of many parts. The self is conscious, the body is an object of consciousness. The self is unchanging, the body is changing. The self and the body are so different, yet we take them to be one and the same.

Sanskrit
आत्मा विनिष्कलो ह्येको देहो बहुभिरावृतः
।तयोरैक्यं प्रपश्यन्ति किमज्ञानमतः परम्।।17।।
Romanisation
ātmā viniṣkalo hyeko deho bahubhirāvṛtaḥ.
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
Word for word translation:
ātmā - the self; viniṣkalo - without parts; hyeko - is certainly one; deho - the body; bahubhirāvṛtaḥ - has many parts; tayor - these two; aikyaṃ - as one; prapaśyanti - are taken; Kim ajñānam - what ignorance; ataḥ - other; param - is greater
Translation:
The ātmā (self) is certainly one and without parts, whereas the body consists of many parts. Yet these two are taken to be one and the same. What greater ignorance can there be?
