Verses 17 to 21 of Aparokṣānubhūti logically point out how very different the Self and the body are. And yet, as a result of ajñāna (ignorance), people see them as one:
ātmā viniṣkalo hyeko deho bahubhirāvṛtaḥ
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
The ātmā has no parts and it is one, whereas the body consists of many parts. Yet these two (the Self and the body) are seen as one. What greater ignorance can there be than this?
ātmā niyāmakaścāntar deho bāhyo niyamyakaḥ
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
The ātmā is the controller and it is internal, whereas the body is external and it is controlled. Yet these two (the Self and the body) are seen as one. What greater ignorance can there be than this?
ātmā jñānamayaḥ puṇyo deho māṃsamayo 'śuciḥ
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
The ātmā is all consciousness and it is pure, whereas the body made of flesh is impure. Yet these two (the Self and the body) are seen as one. What greater ignorance can there be than this?
ātmā prakāśakaḥ svaccho dehastāmasa ucyate
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
The ātmā is the illuminer and it is pure, whereas the body is said to be darkness. Yet these two (the Self and the body) are seen as one. What greater ignorance can there be than this?
ātmā nityo hi sadrūpo deho anityo hyasanmayaḥ
tayoraikyaṃ prapaśyanti kimajñānamataḥ param
The ātmā is eternal (nitya) because its nature is existence (sat), whereas the body is impermanent (anitya) because its nature is non-existence (asat). Yet these two (the Self and the body) are seen as one. What greater ignorance can there be than this?
