A sublime recording!! What a loss that nobody dances like this anymore!! Every dancer here is unique, still all dance in the greatest harmony and in service of their art. No personal mannerisms or idiotic acrobatic trics that so often disturb nowadays performances, but true poetry and aristocracy!!

I am English, and for me Galina Mezentseva is one of the all-time greats. I find your comment extraordinary and also quite insulting in its terminology to this wonderful ballerina. Whichever ballerina is one's personal favourite, no serious balletomane could deny the beautiul line, fluid arms like no other, legato movement and outstanding artistry that Mezentseva possessed. Her soul truly shone through her dancing and her Giselle and Odette/Odile in particular are works of genius.

Part One: My apologies to everyone for my less-than-flattering comments about Mezentseva. I know how it is to feel personally affronted when another presents an opinion decidedly different to one’s own. I had the great good fortune to see the Kirov in Los Angeles CA in 1986. The company received a rapturous ovation, at every performance, not only because of the quality of their dancing, but because their visit was a rare and very precious thing.

Part Two: I attended almost all the performances and to this day, I remember the unparalleled living, breathing beauty of the corps de ballet in the white acts, the Mazurka and Spanish dances in the Ballroom scene. I remember Chenchikova's warm and sisterly Odette, Lyubov Kunakova's steely femininity and Altynai Asylmuratova's Hollywood star power. Mezensteva was the opening night Odette, and my least favourite. I just found her bewildering.

It’s not about inferiority, it’s about differing tastes. I imagine ballet audiences in the former USSR and present day Russia to be among the most knowledgeable in the world, especially about Soviet-Russian-Vaganova-style ballet. The things they may favour, others might find peculiar, such as the erratic tempos, the inflexible pointework, the weakness in allegro. On the other hand, epaulement-starved American audiences LOVE the way Russian dancers use their whole upper body, arms and head.

I would like to add some words about that record session. It lasted 5 days. In the Soviet Union there was practice to film ballets as follows: each scene was recorded separately = one day - one scene with a half-leg rehearsal before. Only after that they recoreded the whole ballet. At the last recording session of the whole ballet ( the famous white nights period ) there were serious problems with lighting.

Of course Galya was far from her best. I believe this was shot not lon after her terrible tendon rapture. She struggled lot on her steps and some of them became stiff. Still you can see most glorious arms and lines Vaganova style only can offer.Her suffering was real and she was introvert and looked like lock herself in her sorrow. This is a very unique and convinsing portrayal of Odette from another tormented soul like Tchaikovsky.
@avesraggiana

Part One: This is my point exactly, she was a hit in Leningrad and really, only in Leningrad. Oleg Vinogradov promoted her heavily during the Kirov’s1980s overseas tours but audiences in the West much preferred Terekhova and Chenchikova and most especially the very junior but extremely beautiful and charismatic Altynai Asylmuratova. Critics would write rather unkindly about the “dreaded Mezentseva” and her toes that “groped the floor”, rather than skimmed it.

She wasn`t really on her best days when dancing this ballet. Her left foot was visiblly sorrowed. She coudn`t even have the speed to execute the 32 fouettees. But, to compensate, her arms were so beautifull has always, a dream came true.

Part Two: Even taking into account regional tastes and cultural aesthetics, Galina Mezentseva was one of those ballerinas who you either “got”, or didn’t. I was one of those that DIDN’T get her, and consequently, never warmed to her. There’s just no accounting for balletomanes’ tastes. For example, I revere Natalia Makarova and I love almost everything she dances. Yet I have a very good balletomane friend who obsesses constantly about ballet but can’t stand watching Makarova! Go figure.
@avesraggiana

No flattery intended, at all. I reflect the general consensus among American audiences that our dancers are “over-trained” in the legs and woefully under-trained in the use of the upper body. That’s why to us, the Maryinsky corps is a revelation in just about everything they dance. On the other hand, it has taken over a decade for Vaganova-trained principal dancers to be brought up to speed, literally, in Balanchine’s fleet and speedy footwork. Speed and precision are still works in progress.

l am not a dancer so may be l really do not realize all the weakness but she simply gives to me more emotions than every other dancer in these roles ,l also heard that she had some bad injury from which never fully recovered and due this matter gave her best before the filming of this and giselle.

Why only Leningrad? And Moscow ? And other cities and republics of the Soviet Union? Do not you know? I must tell you that her Giselle was considered by most prominent soviet ballet critics to be one of the greatest achievments of the Soviet ballet of the second half of the 20th century. Now it is clear - it is one of the greatest achievements in the world ballet history. And it is not Vinogradov but public opinion saw in Galina a genius. Please, be more correct.
@Bnesque

I can't agree with you completely either in here. Some principals lack speed and precision, that's true. But there are great speed technicians are there. For example, Victoria Tereshkina or Valeria Martynyuk were really great in BI. In fact, it's Tereshkina's TPDD that made me re-aware how Balanchine is beautiful. For me, Balanchine works woke up just with Mariinsky ballerinas. Without crazy foot speed Ekaterina Kondaurova and Osmolkina redifined beauty of Serenade, to name a few.

Part Three: Still, all the ballerinas found a way to make Odette/Odile work for them. What NO ONE could make work was that beyond embarrassing, unintentionally hilarious, pillow feather and cat fight between Siegfried and Rotbhart at the very end! Every performance I attended was a powerful and moving theatrical experience, that was very nearly done in by that “battle”, and it caused some tittering during what should have been a very serious and dramatically fraught moment.
