Having suffered a locomotive shortage in recent months, the Swanage Railway demonstrated a return to strength during their annual 'Autumn Steam Gala', fielding six steam locomotives over the course of the event. The gala was held over the weekend of Friday the 11th - Sunday the 13th of October, featuring a variety of services with regular passenger services bolstered by demonstration freight runs. Each day also included four return trips 'over the road' to the River Frome bridge - the current limit of SR metals, as part of the passenger service.
The visit of Standard Class 5MT - 73156 from the Great Central Railway was the result of an agreed exchange with the Swanage Railway, with T9 - 30120 visiting the GCR for their 'Autumn Steam Gala' a week prior. 30120 only recently returned to service, having been sidelined since May for maintenance. In addition, the gala also marked a return to service for 34053 "Sir Keith Park" as well as U Class - 31806, both receiving Axlebox repairs.
