The British Generals who thought this was a good place to land troops must have been asleep in class at military academy. Given the geography and the fact that Ataturk knew what he was doing and had such well-established troops at the top of the cliff line, the allied forces, including ANZAC, had no hope of achieving their mission at that location. We're so lucky that the Turks are sporting about this, and look after the monuments and grave sites.

Actually, I learnt on our visit that the Turks only had one company defending Gallipoli as they knew there would be a landing but did not know where. We made it within metres of achieving the objective on the first day but the British ordered a halt until supplies landed. The Kiwis got to the top and waited for us to get there from our side, but the delay allowed Ataturk to get reinforcements to the top and the battlefield froze.
