Was lucky enough to see the swans in London at the town and country club in Oct 1987 children of God tour.... It was one of the most amazing musical experiences I ever had.... The support band that nite was a new band from Iceland tacked on the bill because birthday the song was huge at the time etc bjorks dulcet tones opened the proceedings most of the audience were sugarcubes fans..... They did their set and were very well received anyway on came the swans in full power mode and I mean FULL POWER THE MUSIC WAS VERY LOUD AND CONFRONTED THE AUDIENCES Who left in droves(4000)capacityFull) 1 have never seen anything quite so funny at the end of the gig probably a few 100 there....... A powerful experience never to be forgotten still have my threadbare time is money bastard t-shirt and the missus got the greed t-shirt..... VIP band

This review says SO much in so few words. I saw them last year (it was a dream come true, actually!) and, yeah, the best I could come up with afterward was a series of "wow..." 's.

Great pictures! When we saw them last year during the opening act Michael Gira actually came up behind us and talked to us. It was kind of scary to turn around and realize it was him talking, lol. Of course he was very friendly but you don't expect to turn around and see Michael Gira standing behind you. He has quite the presence.

Thanks for this, I really loved Swans in the 1990's and bought all of their stuff immediately when it came out. My first one by them was "Omniscience" which I bought based solely on the artwork, and it blew my mind. Unfortunately, that album is not available on vinyl. However, I know where I can lay my hands on both "Soundtracks for the Blind" and "Children of God" and I eagerly anticipate getting those in house soon. Either one of those releases should frighten the neighbors significantly (laughs).

Man, we have very similar taste in music. I got into music at the age of 3, when my brother turned me onto Sabbath, Priest, Kiss, AC/DC, & the other metal Godz. I'm now 40 & can easily say that Swans & Melvins are way up there in my favorite bands of all time. I got into both around '89 when my friend Brian Patton (Soilent Green / Eyehategod guitarist) turned me onto them. I got copies of 'Cop', 'Young God', 'Bullhead, 'Eggnog', & 'Ozma'. After I saw Melvins 20 times, I stopped counting. Ha! Buzz & Dale were super cool when I met them. Swans, I saw 3 times: 'Great Annihilator', 'Soundtracks For the Blind', & 'To Be Kind' tours. I was right in front for 'Annihilator'. BLEW MY MIND. An "experience", just as you put it. 'To Be Kind' show took the cake. I've probably been to a thousand shows in my time & it was wayyy up near the top. I walked outta there thinking, "No one can top that." I haven't been to a concert since. Note: I recently uploaded rare live audio from the Lorax era of Melvins & the 'Cop / Young God' era of Swans to my channel. I think you'd friggin' love it. Scope it when you have time. Other treats there as well. Cheers, my Swans & Melvins lovin' brother! ;)

P.S. Guitarist Norman Westberg's solo recordings are incredible! It's dark ambient stuff (well, that how I'd best describe it), making all of the sounds w/ his guitar. It is crazy good. I put it on at night when going to sleep. It's dark, but really relaxing. Score these if you don't have them: '13', 'Plough', 'Not October', 'MRI', 'Jasper Sits Out' (named after his dog), &....'The All Most Quiet'.

I think a lot of music I gravitated towards when I was younger was largely confrontational in nature. I was setting up a barrier that would keep people out and discourage them from crossing the line with me, as their would be this huge foreboding sound erected around me. Swans are definitely one of those bands you put on when you just want to be alone and are needing space. They will scare the hell out most people. There's something very real and primal about their music that is irrefutable. You will definitely know you are listening to the real thing. Be careful of what you ask for... you just might get it.

Sounds like it was a magical night, Dereck. Great photos at the end - intense! Man, I love the artwork on that Angels Of Light LP. Still awaiting my copy of The Seer to arrive in the mail. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 2010 Swans LP you bought at the show. Bret

It was an amazing experience when we saw SWANS too, can't wait to see them again. We got right up by the stage too and Michael Gira sweated on us. He must have sweated at least a gallon that night. Did they turn off the air there? It was crazy hot when we saw him because he turned off the A/C since he says it messes with his voice. We'll be seeing Melvins during the same week as SWANS. We're gonna die, lol. Hope you can find the Seer soon, amazing album! I enjoy that AoL release too.
