Good stuff, I picked up a 50$ 2014 Ariens today basic model 6 speed , 17.5 Briggs, he said engine was blown (smoking bad) took it home found crankcase full oF fuel, drained 2x starts perfectly no smoke and I installed a shut off valve , sold within 3 hrs $640 :)

Nice! Yep, I’ve learned that smoking engines can mean fuel leaking into oil like that. $640 is a really price to sell at! I would be looking for $500 here.

Hi, thanks for the sub! I get them from several different ways, but things get easier once the word is out that you do mowers.

So I can swap a riding mower motor onto a zero turn?

A lot of times you can. Just depends on the motors, but a lot of them are the same or very similar.

engine filling with fuel is a bad needle and seat- the carb sol has nothing to do with it ----- just say'n-- I have been working on lawn equipment for over 60 years

Interesting! I always thought that the carb solenoid shut off fuel.

A couple of questions: 2014 John Deer Z425 front to back type motor. I noticed a couple of years ago that it started leaking oil underneath one of the cylinder heads. There was not enough room to see exactly where it was coming from. Last year, it got a little worse, and it was now slinging it all over and on the muffler. I pulled the motor and pulled the oil pan, noticed the gasket was really brittle and falling apart. Anyways I just received the replacement, and it is super thin. Should I use some type of permatex sealer on both sides of the gasket and if so what would work best. Lastly could oil be coming from any other area. Thanks

I have an older Z425 that was purchased new, and it has been the best mower I have ever owned. It still runs good, but it leaks oil under what I will call the passenger side head and then hits the muddled and smokes up the front yard. I usually have to add a 1/4 quart the following week. I can't see exactly where it is coming from, pulled the head a year or so ago, and replaced the gasket but shortly after, it started again. I'm thinking I'm going to have to pull the motor in order to see where it os leaking. How hard is this or maybe you know where it could be coming from. Thanks

It’s not too bad to pull the motor. Getting all the fender and hear shrouds and stuff off takes a bit, but you could probably have the motor out in an hour or two. Less if you’ve done that type of stuff before. You might have a different engine set up than mine. On mine, both heads are on the ‘driver’ side because the engine is mounted crosswise.

Mine is front to back. I did replace the cykinder head gasket a while back but it did not fix the problem ,continued leaking oil. I have to look underneith to see the oil leak but unfortionatly i can only see it on the fins, not where it's actually coming from

I pulled the Z425 that sets front to back, 2014 model. It was leaking a good amount of oil, could only see it on the fins on the bottom of the cylinder head on the passengers side, but I couldn't tell where it was really coming from so this is why I pulled the motor. It seems like the only place oil could leak from would be what I would call the oil pan. Would you happen to know any other areas that oil could leak from.
