This a fab mending video, so helpful to see an irregular hole mended and what to do with the excess slack left from the reconstructed horizontal bars, thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Mending irregular holes can be tricky and it's wonderful to hear that the way I handled the excess slack was useful for you. I appreciate your support and will continue to share more tips and techniques in future videos.

I greatly appreciate your videos and the amazing techniques that you present. I finally attempted to mend a hand knit sock and WOW. I used a small crochet hook and copied your method. The mended area looks almost invisible. So much better than my usual darning. I have fixed 4 socks, and it was easier to do and looked better each time. Thank you for your clearly presented techniques!

How big of a hole do you think this technique could reasonably work for? I have a beloved sweater with two fist sized holes in the elbows and I am trying to find the best technique for mending them.

What if you do not have matching yarn?

Look to see if it is seamed anywhere with matching yarn. If so you can undo the seam (it is often a chain stitch and unravels easily if you do it from the rounded end of the "chains" rather than the "pointed" end of them). If so, use that. You can redo the seam later with a yarn that is similar in weight and colour and nobody will know the difference. If you can't do that then you could always shorten, say, the body of the sweater or both sleeves by a round/row. To do that you'd removed 2 rounds or rows and Kitchener stitch/graft them back together, replacing 1 row/round and freeing up almost a whole round's worth of yarn.. And failing all that a visit to a needlework store that sells wool tapestry thread that can be split into separate strands could do the trick. You can use however many strands you need to best match the weight of the yarn in your garment. And tapestry wools come in many more shades of every colour than hand-knitting yarns do. If I couldn't do any of that I'd go for a visible repair that is meant to be seen. It would take a while but if you don't want to Swiss darn over the area with the shape of say, a butterfly or acorn, then you could do a stripe right across the garment and add matching stipes on the sleeves, echoing a neckline... You get the idea. :-)
