Nobody likes to see leaks coming from unusual places on their car. I'm not saying my cars are perfectly leak-free, because they all sweat a little horsepower. Some systems are easier to check and top off, but rear differentials? Not so much. If a rear differential is leaking oil, that's something you need to look at pronto.
The pinion seal on my 12 Bolt was showing signs of being a little bit weepy. I'd rather take care of this before it becomes a problem on the track. Even though this car gets raced, some parts are just off-the-shelf normal stuff. Seals like this pinion seal are no different. You can easily get them from your local parts store or specialty suppliers like Yukon Gear.
Replacing a pinion seal isn't a huge project, but it's more time-consuming than difficult. Nobody likes draining a differential without a drain plug, but luckily, covers like this Moser are available that make it easy once they're installed.
With the fluid drained and the driveshaft removed, I took off the 1-⅛" nut, and the pinion yoke came right off. Word of caution: be careful not to push the pinion into the differential. It's easier to be careful than to deal with problems later.
I removed the old seal with a pair of screwdrivers and a hammer, gently tapping my way around the lip and slowly prying it out. After cleaning the housing, I inspected the old seal for clues about the leak. I found two voids where the sheet metal of the seal didn't make contact with the housing.
For the new seal, I decided to use some Right Stuff to fill those voids and ensure a leak-free seal. I drove it in with a piece of aluminum and wood, and was rewarded with some gasket maker uniformly oozing out around the seal. That's a good sign of a consistent press on the new seal.

After reassembly, I used the right gear oil and made sure both drain and fill plugs had Teflon paste for a leak-free seal. I've been watching for a few days, and there's no sign of the leak coming back. I call that a win!
