One of the treats of my career as a music librarian is that I get to meet, get to know, and get to conference with other music librarians. They are a great, diverse, and cool group of people and I just love getting to spend time with them. A whole bunch of us met this week in St. Louis to attend the annual meeting of the Music Library Association (MLA). One of the super cool things that makes MLA unique is that they’ve long put together a big band made up of conference attendees that practice at night once they get in town and then play at the closing reception. I can’t really contribute much to a big band playing swing and jazz so I didn’t even consider trying to play with that group, but my friends Andy Leach, Marci Cohen, and Greg MacAyeal put together a few years ago a rock band to play after the MLA Big Band and I could see a role for myself in that group. I was delighted when they invited me to play with them at this year’s meeting! I picked “Sweet Jane” by Lou Reed to sing as it’s a song I’ve played since I was in my high school rock band Oedipus Rex. I had an absolute ball practicing with everyone and last night was the big show! My dear friend Grover graciously took a video of that to share and even though the sounds a bit distorted because, well, we were playing rock and roll and I never really learned to tame my loud voice for a mic, I think it will give folks a feel for what fun was had. Thanks to Whitney, Ryan, Brendan, Rick, Marci, Tom, and Andy for letting me join them and thanks to all the fine folks of MLA for another rejuvenating meeting! Let’s do it again!
