The same thing happened to us last year. We lost about 40% of our sweet potatoes. This year we grew in a large raised metal bed with wire mesh underneath. Not a single potato was lost!

I know how heartbreaking it is to lose almost a whole crop to critters. Sorry this happened to you. I found this online: Protect plantings from voles with a fence that's buried 3 to 6 inches below the soil surface and bent outwards into an L-shape. Above ground, the fence should be from 4 to 12 inches tall. Use non-rusting, one-quarter-inch mesh. Hardware cloth works well. Not sure if it will work but there are some other ideas online as well.

@@StoneyAcresGardening I went on YT a few years back searching for a Vole deterant and found some channels talking about Castor Oil. I just bought a gallon and sprayed it on the soil in our raised beds. It did work and saved our crop for that season. Those little rascals went thru the chicken wire floor. We reworked our raised beds and put rabbit wire next time. No more Voles, so haven't had to use Castor Oil since.

I had problems last year. Read somewhere that sticking pinwheels in the ground will deter them due to the vibrations. Bought a bunch at the dollar store and stuck them in. Amazingly it seems to have worked. Got some round aluminum pie plates that I'm going to try and make some more over the winter. No poisons and inexpensive. Don't know if it'll work for you, but could be worth a try.

Last year I put all the sweet potatoes in plastic pots. The biggest ones I could find. Only to find that they chewed holes in the bottom of the pot and they got in anyway. This year, I found a lady giving away old roofed tiles. I put the tiles downand I put the pots on top of the tiles. I haven’t harvested yet, but I can let you know what happened.

I know exactly how you feel. Last year everyone in the neighborhood was having problems with mice. They ate almost all of my sweet potatoes except for the ones in containers. This year all my sweet potatoes just died for some reason except the ones in the container. So, you could try planting yours in containers or have some kind of a wire mesh in your garden, but that would take a lot of digging. I may just use containers next year for all my sweet potatoes.

Hardware cloth buried along the wall with a little above ground might keep new ones out. Might have to trap the ones you already have. Or borrow a Jack Russell for a few days.🙂

What a bummer! We have voles and I suspect they are visiting our greenhouse as I find chewed off kale leaves often. I can see the soil spilled out at the corners of our raised beds but I don't see any visible holes. We caught one vole a couple years ago with a net but he slipped out and ran away. 😠 I'm afraid to see what our carrots and beets look like that aren't ready yet.

We have found an organic repellant that you can put down in a band at the edge of your property. We are going to try that along with trapping.

I hired a consultant. They suggested I make a big cage with Gopher wire all the way around. If I do that, it’s going to cost a lot. And I won’t have a lot of room to garden as I would be confined to just growing inside the cage, unless I made a huge cage. I wonder how much it would cost to buy that wire.

Man alive, I'm sorry . That's awful. We have them too . Not sure if its fool proof but we bought those vibrating thing's, they are round spikes. Takes a few batteries and we place them around our garden area. Since we did that we haven't had anymore issues in the garden. They are all over our yard though. I will tell you dogs will go after them too. We had a dog that used to kill them. We'd have her in the yard and she would just stop and start stalking the ground and frantically dig and nab the sucker. Had a cat once that used to leave us gifts too. I hope you find a solution that works for you. Thats a heartbreaking loss. Thanks to all the comments on here ,the people talking about placing hardware cloth in raised beds . We have 2 new beds going in this winter , so i appreciate that advice.
