Big Boy toys. I’m a service plumber. Can I be your plumber. I just love customers like yourself. Ones that want to buy your own parts. I’m actually going tomorrow morning to change out a faucet that this customers wife went fishing online. She just had to have this beautiful piece of junk. Now a week later I’m buying her a new faucet that is pretty much like the one she purchased. The difference is mine looks a bit different, works much better and will last for year’s. So for the first faucet it cost her almost $600 dollars installed and no warranty. You have to remember I’m $235.00 an hour. I don’t sell junk. I order most products from the factory itself. I try to stay away from “supply” houses. They charge as much as a retail store. As long as car wizard is buy his materials either from a dealership or it’s a quality store or shop. I pay the 15 to 40% markup. All three of my Acura NSX’s went to the dealership. 99% of the indie shops had no idea how to work on them. The dealership always gave me a loaner vehicle and in my mind Never over charged me for anything!! Indie shops are in business to make money. As long as they are not ripping me off. I’m ok.

The Porsche featured here is owned by a customer who is simply doing preventative maintenance in having parts replaced as a preventative measure not because they are broken whereas Hoovie is bringing truly broken cars into the shop. This is a 911 Carrera 4S. A 997.1. Custom exhaust. cold air intake, euro clear side markers, it appears to have a clear bra at least back to the A pillar. By 2008 the risk of IMS failure is minimal; however, the risk does not totally go away until the 997.2 version. The harder it is driven, the lesser the risk of a IMS bearing failure. The 911 badge in the back is from the latest versions - the 992, and is evocative of the 1970s badges. Nice touch. It is a 13 year-old car with 65 miles, and probably tracked, so it makes sense the owner is probably preemptively replacing parts before they fail, and probably has a noise pulley. He probably got top-shelf parts because he's picky.

I can certainly see the logic of letting YOU get the parts for a car and including an amount for markup - that's perfectly fair and appropriate! I think one reason why so many people almost routinely prefer to provide their own parts is because of experiences with less ethical mechanics who will just rip customers off with exorbitant mark-ups! Caution against this treatment is a difficult habit for many customers to break! Of course the other classic type of customer bringing their own parts in is the cheapskate who will find the cheapest online (or stolen?) option regardless of the possible consequences! Have you already done a video on how to find or check out the most knowledgeable and trustworthy mechanics?

No idea if the insurances here in europe do charge more for 2 seaters, never heard that before. But what i do know is that your insurance costs depend on your personal age, how many cars of the exact model (in this case 997's) are involved in accidents, and on what replacment parts and labour in a dealership workshop costs for the model of the car. (This is the reason, why the insurrance money i have to pay for my old E63 is surprisingly as low as i had to pay for my previous E350 Diesel and the E220 CDI before that. -> i got older and the body panel prices and stuff isn't much more than a standard E-class)

The customer is making sure that he is getting the brand of parts that he wants and that all of the parts for the various jobs are on-site at the same time so that he can drop his car off and get it back without delay. The problem of back ordered parts is avoided. The customer is obviously a perfectionist and does not want to leave things to chance. The mechanic now has no excuse not to install a new o-ring or crush washer since it has been provided. This would not have been a problem with the Car Wizard because he is also a perfectionist, but with other mechanics, who knows?

Cheapest part I've had to deal with? I bought a 190E that had the suspension entirely redone less than 10K miles before I got it. I knew this buying it (it was a very rare Sportline Limited Edition) but every single bushing had already failed because the quality was such crap. The engine mounts had "Made in India" stickers and were the consistency of jello. The engine would fall forward into the radiator when braking. Worst part experience though? I had to replace the heater core on my mom's 96 Mercury Grand Marquis, which had been my grandfather's car. I went to the dealer and paid over $200 for the part, figuring that it would be the best quality since the job is dash out and I didn't want to deal with it again. The quality did not look great but I installed it anyway. It ruptured within a month and Ford refused to warranty it. I went down to O'Reilly's to look at the $95 Murray heater core that they stocked. Much much better quality, at least visually, so I bought it and did the whole job over again. It lasted another 5 years before we scrapped the car due to another fun Ford design: the intake manifold failed for the 3rd time. We tried replacing it but the "updated" design (which it already had) was NLA aftermarket and from Ford. We tried two different brands that the forums suggested and they both failed within hours. I also had experience with a 2006 Grand Marquis which was my grandfather's replacement car, and like the other it was 100% dealer serviced since new. We got it with 40K miles and it was only about 6 years old at that point. First thing that failed was the power steering pressure sensor, was leaking internally and gushing fluid out at 42K miles. Shocks and most of the front end was caput by 80K miles. By 95k miles, the timing chain was slapping pretty bad at startup so we dumped the car. Both this and the 96 had the leather seats which were incredibly uncomfortable, zero support and rock hard leather because crap quality, much different than late 80s/early 90s panther body cars. The 96 was fairly reliable (though you really had to do a full suspension rebuild every 80k miles or so) but you couldn't get parts anymore to easily address the main flaw: the intake (yes you can do PI intake but it's much more involved and requires a decent amount of modification). The 06 was just a pile of junk, the quality had completely diminished by then and despite the forums telling me the timing chain issues were solved by 04, ours with 3k mile oil change intervals proved that wasn't the case. I have no clue why those cars are so circle jerked besides cop car. They don't even ride well in comparison to its competitors, plus yeah, the seats suck and the engines, if you're lucky enough to get one with dual exhaust (single robs a lot of power) have a really weird torque curve for a relatively large displacement V8 plus it's paired with one of the slowest shifting and worst ratios automatics.

Get rid of that cold air filter ...mine kept gumming up the MAF sensor...I got ride of it ...also it is sucking in hot air from the engine compartment and that is not productive at all!
