Good point about Oscar Wegener. When it comes to tracking the ball and putting more emphasis on the arm, I was on the wrong path myself for many years. Thought about athletic stance, trunk rotation etc.

Swinging volleys is one of my fav shots. Most of the time I prefer it instead of just smashing it and you create a better angle with it when the timing is on point. And I think its a lot better with the buggy whip, you end up better prepared w/ the racquet for the next shot if there's another one. Great advise on tracking the ball, I didn't notice that I run sideways towards the ball instead of just stalking the ball w/ the racquet upfront!

Aha, a young and sexy Jeff. I went out and hit swing volleys for half an hour today. First time ever for me, and before I had watched this video. I tried a few with top-spin, a few cross court, and a few waist high, but the one that was the most natural for me was flat down the line (or inside out) taken chest to shoulder high. The flat down the line stayed on target even when I went full force. Funny that your students are reluctant to hit them. I can wait for the first floater to come my way in match play, I intend to take a mighty swing. I wish you would come back to this topic again, not because of the sound quality, but because you have new and interesting ideas to share.

Jeff - you need to revisit this one - it is 7 years old but the main problem is that Matt is inaudible because he doesn't have the microphone.

Swing(ing) volley vs. drive volley? How do you differentiate between these terms? Drive volleys are a sub-class of swinging volleys being hit above the net height? Swinging volleys are hit with low to high swing path with topspin trajectory while drive volleys are flat shots above net level? The terms are interchangeable? Drive volley is an older term, not in active use anymore in modern tennis? What? :D

Thanks for the clarification on your part, Jeff. Still I have varying experiences on the usage and preferences among different (generation) coaches on this very subject. There is a tendency in my experience that the older generation pros (coaches) prefer the "drive volley" term while emphasizing that this shot is hit above the net level around your shoulder height with a flat or even downward swing path (close to the net) and the swinging volley is a more modern and liberated term used by younger coaches with this more up to date modern outlook letting you swing the ball with confidence and composure also in more challenging positions on balls of your waist/hip height and with the pronounced topspin swing path giving you the edge if you have the balls , guts, confidence and skill, I mean. :D
