Evidence, if any were needed, that Switzerland is a country unlike any other. For where else in the world would a military airfield have a public road running right through it, closed only by a simple unmanned barrier during take-offs and landings? This film shows how close the public are as military jets taxi around, including a good view of a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet multirole combat jet. One onlooker even stands inside the low airfield fence next to the runway to get a better photo. The noise this twin engine supersonic plane makes taking off when you are this close to it is unbelievable, and the video cannot really do it justice.
Also seen training are the Swiss Air Force’s aerobatic team, Patrouille Suisse, in their six distinctive red-liveried Northrop F-5E Tiger ll fighter/bomber jets. The video shows them practising flying in formation over the airfield, as cars pass below on the now-open-again public road. The barrier only comes down as the jets land one by one.
Don’t miss the Audi convertible, trapped the wrong side of the barrier as planes land, because the driver didn’t make it across the airfield in time. Although being there was “verboten”, no one seemed to mind! Only in Switzerland?
