I love it when you do videos on these old bolt action rifles, it's especially interesting to see the evolution of the Mannlicher rifles. I hope you eventually do a video on the Greek army Mannlicher-Schönauer if you ever come by one. I've only ever seen one in my life, and it had one of the more interesting magazines I've seen on a bolt action rifle. Quite different from the other Mannlicher rifles.

The Mannlicher M1895 is only considered to be not made well because of the refurbished versions that came out of the '30s. The original Mannlichers were well made and the Swiss didn't care for them probably because they couldn't make them right like the Austro-Hungarians.

I have a original 1889 but also found a sporter someone had cut down (Im pretty sure an importer or some shop did them because I have seen several identical sporters) It was only 175 and I figured even the parts are worth that. It's actually a pretty handy gun, of course it still has the really long action but it's a million times more handy than the full-length rifle. I think those 10 years would have been better off using cut down 1889's than these if they hated them so much and they weren't accurate. The sporter 1889 has a chopped down barrel but is still quite accurate. I still want one of these rifles. I have a soft spot for my M95's and also have a M95M converted to 8mm Mauser by Yugoslavia. I don't shoot it much because I broke the extractor and had it welded back together. Works perfectly but those extractors are absolutely unobtanium, have been looking for a spare for 8 years. You can't convert the 8x56R extractor. I've heard of people converting extractors from something else, maybe a 1917, but haven't seen any pics to try it myself.

Straight pulls are always interesting. I should have bought a K31 a few years ago when they were still relatively cheap, but i hadn't paid enough attention to them. I wouldn't mind having an Austrian M1895; from what i hear the 8x56R is not too hard to find components for handloading (once i finally get my stuff set up, lol). I have a Ross, bought about 4 yrs ago, that i think i have identified by reading the Blue Book. It should be a 303, but i still need to slug the bore to make sure. Anyway, so be it. Great video as always. Thank you

You know years ago, I picked up one of those Austrian Steyr M95's and tore her down, tossed the barrel in the bin and mounted a .44 barrel, chambered her for the .444 Marlin round, she made a honey of a carbine with an 18 inch barrel, full wood stock, and a couple of modified stripper clips. Mounted a set open sights. Used her to take a few white tail deer, then sold her off at a gun show in Devils Lake ND. I saw her many times after that, at different gun shows, always with a much higher price then I sold her for. Ah well such is life. I have a list of over 50 guns that I once owned and wished to God I had never let go, that is near the top, just below the plain jane old Luger in the holster as captured, with capture papers that I let a gun buddy take to a show to trade for a modern 9mm only to be presented with an old beat up polish 9, I took a Chief's special instead, and a nice Engfield nicely sporterized that I ended up trading for a pair of tires for my LTD. Life goes on.

I trace my love for full-stocked carbines back to the movie "A Boy and His Dog" in it, Don Johnson roamed a post-apocalyptic wasteland armed with a Mannlicher stocked, cutdown '03 Springfield. 12 year old me thought it was the coolest looking rifle evah!

Question for experienced K31 reloaders:Reloading data seems very dumbed down compared to GP11 performance. Are they publishing "liability" data because of the possibility that it will be used in the weaker Swiss actions(like 45-70)?
@That_NJ_guy
5 жыл бұрын
I would say it max should be about GP11. What book are you using and what is the data like? The GP11 round was designed for k11s, 96/11s, and G11 which are weaker actions since the K31 has front locking lugs and the 1911 series has mid locking lugs. The GP11 is hot for the 1911 series but safe for it. The action for the 1911 series is really just they 1896 action and that was meant GP90 (which is what the Swiss m93 in this video is meant to shoot). Basically long story short the data is the books to meant to be safe for all Swiss guns that shoot 7.5x55 but again it should be giving you GP11 like data.

"One of the rarer of the swiss straight pull rifles" One of the least known maybe but not that rare, you can find them quite easy in switzerland for 500CHF (=500$) or less. The 1900, 1905, 31/42 and 31/43 (and all prototypes) are actualy harder to find and generaly a lot more expensive. Sorry to be the grumpy swiss guy under every video, keep up the good work :p

I'm lucky enough to have a good supply of GP-11, but have reloaded many other rounds. Don't be intimidated. Read a lot, starting with a good basic how to manual, and be very methodical as you go.
