I don’t feel like magnets are necessary to keep the joycons secure. A major reason for the joycons becoming loose is that the plastic latch on the back of them gets worn down after repeatedly scraping against the indent in the metal rail when going in and out. Metal latches would fix that problem and there are already metal replacements that cost a few bucks and have existed for years. They would probably be cheaper than magnets as well.
@lbco13

I'd assume the rail system, assuming a similar style of "Joy-con" would be less full than the Switch and use magnets to help stabilise and strengthen when attached. I do not see a complete magnetic connection on a console primarily aimed at families, with children. I feel like this report is more of a mistranslation/misunderstanding.
@DuelScreen
5 ай бұрын
(1) If magnets are being used they are probably for alignment to and prevent the joycons from being incorrectly attached. Maybe there is some kind of tab sticking out of the main unit that needs to align with a cavity in the joycon and the magnets do that while also preventing them from being attached upside down. (2) Now that we mostly use solid state storage rather than mechanical hard drives, magnets are no longer the danger that they once were. We also have better shielding technology too.
@BorisTheGoose92

I hardly use the switch in handheld and still have this issue. While I like the idea of them attaching magnetically this likely rules out the possibility of hall effect sensors in the next joycon as I would imagine engineering it in a way with both magnets to attach joycon to the system and magnets for stick management sounds like something they don't actually want to mess with. I'm hopeful this is some view of some patent and it's actually hall sensors instead and it was just misinterpreted.
@CrazyRiverOtter
4 ай бұрын
Hall effect sticks are such a grift. The longevity of a joystick depends on its build quality, not the sensor technology. The reason so many joysticks drift is because manufacturers cut corners to keep profits up. I've used a number of hall-effect joysticks lately. Some are decent, but only because they're on controllers made by companies like 8BitDo that have good quality control. Every Gulikit stick I've tried has cheap piece of crap that has broken after only a few weeks of use, with the exception of the ones on my RetroFlag controller.
@squiddu
3 күн бұрын
@@CrazyRiverOtter Still, they're barely any more expensive if at all, and generally it doesn't seem like the bar of quality has to be *that* absurdly high for them to be decent sticks, compared to what we usually have now. you just have to make sure the magnets don't touch.

They were gonna do magnets originally and I think they either damaged the software or just kept falling off. They liked the sound it made and recorded it for the Switch opener sound effect. About magnets and electronics: It's not really all magnets and all electronics. Most electronics are okay with the magnets we use every day. Hard drives (and floppies) were a special case because they used magnetism to store data, so they were especially sensitive to magnetism. LCDs work similar - they use an electric field to align the crystals, so they also are a bit of a special case where they are more sensitive than other electronics. That said, due to the duality of electricity and magnetism, a very powerful magnet can indeed affect electronics in general. But something so powerful is rare in a house. Also - shielding is a thing. They could easily shield the more sensitive components if need be.

You also have to think that this is going to be on the side of the device, while angular force is going to be highest when you go to pick it up from the side. 4:15 The screen thing was true for CRTs, which used electromagnets to deflect the electron guns to sweep cathode rays across the screen. Having a permanent magnet near it would bend the rays in unintended ways and also mess with the alignment. In fact they used to throw themselves out of wack with enough use, which is why they usually came with some form of degaussing (de-magnetizing) coil to set the whole thing straight. Modern screen tech such as LCDs and OLEDs are much more resilient to magnetic interference. Also HDDs do get messed up by strong enough magnets, but again more recent technologies like SSDs and flash storage don't have as much issue. Fun fact: The DS line of consoles used magnetic sensors to detect when it was closed. Where were the magnets you ask? They were in the speakers. ;)

The magnet rumor is what makes this article sketchy to me. Nintendo is Nintendo, but their engineers would know better than to create an attachment system that would be widely unreliable. Might be interesting if the magnetic joycons are on the next system, if there are rail/magnet conversion kits, at least forward if not also backward. Then you can stick your old rail joycons on a magnet to connect to the new system to expand your collection to the new system. If they did backwards as well, a magnetic attaching rail that works with the old system could see sales in the new joycons for people not ready (or quite able to afford) the system jump.

So the biggest reason magnets had such a negative impact on hard drives and televisions/monitors was because those devices made use of electromagnetic fields to read/write data or electron beams that could be impacted by a magnetic field. The field created by a magnet (or powerful enough speaker) could negatively impact how electrons moved from the electron gun to the screen (as well as magnetically charge the mask over time, causing the electrons to permanently get sent to the wrong phosphor dot) in old CRT monitors and televisions as well as interfere with the magnetic data storage on older hard drives. With technology shifting to LEDs and solid state storage media magnets won't have the strength or right kind of magnetic field to influence or damage them.

one way that i could imagine it working is having 1 or 2 shark finn looking things on either the joy cons or the switch (more likely it would be on the controller tho) and then having a strong magnet on the top and an magnet of the opposite charge at the bottom, this would somewhat cancel out the magnetic fields towards the console and outside the console aswell as preventing putting on the controller the wrong way, but honestly i dont see them putting strong magnets on the switch as it would probably be hell to repair when the little screws get attached to it

The reason for them 'popping off' is because the little latch for is just a small piece of plastic. It tends to chip - Its actually fairly easy to replace. You don't need to dig too far into the Joycon to access it, and there exists 3rd party metal ones. - Though I'm not sure if metal is a great idea since I think its preferable for the cheap plastic latch to break then the more expensive and harder to replace rail. I was kinda hoping they would drop the Joycons. They work well in handheld mode, but if I'm playing on a TV I always end up playing with a standard controller anyway, so I wouldn't mind a Switch Lite like system. Also... I like that Nintendo is the only one still saying No to Analog triggers. Because besides racing games, what games actually use the analog part of the trigger? 90% of games basically treat them like digital buttons. that actuate at some arbitrary point - except there is not tactile feel for when that point is.

My Switch OLED right joy-con has been popping off since it came out of the box. Weirdly enough, it’s the joy-con, not the system, because when I put older ones on it, they stick

Ah yes, magnets... What could possibly go wrong?

Really just hard drives and crts are susceptible to anything that would fit in a tablet, and thats ancient tech. However miyamoto specifically said they decided against magnets for the switch because it wasnt secure so i doubt its the only thing holding them on

Still placing my bets on swappable control segments within the controller that stay with magnets.

I feel like having magnetic joycons while playing Mario maker would be an absolute disaster.

this is interesting since the switch logo is in large part the clicking of the joycon

Maybe by magnetic joycons they don't nessesarily mean how they connect to the system, but mean that they have the magnetic hall effect joysticks to prevent stick drift?

The analogs back then would have solid skirts underneath, going as far as the Gamecube and even the PlayStation Dualshocks as sort of attempts to prevent dust getting into the contacts.

Magnetic joy cons has to be the dumbest idea ever. They wouldn’t stay on the Switch for very long. The current joy cons feel loose after a short period of time of use.

There are lots of things that I like magnets to do but this sounds absolutely terrible. I cannot imagine you would get enough force to hold the three pieces together in such a tiny space. Think how easy it is to pull off magsafe accessories.

So on the prospect of magnets warping screens: CRT monitors (like older TVs and computer monitors) do experience warping and can become permanently damaged by magnets. Old computer speakers and TV speakers used to be magnetically shielded to stop this from happening. However, with modern display panels that don't rely on a tube to show the images on screen, this isn't a concern. As a result nearly every speaker sold now isn't magnetically shielded. Sooo yeah (source: I recently had to find a pair of speakers to pair with the Sony Trinitron TV I picked up to play older games and VHS tapes and what not, and this was a big concern).

If the joycons for the switch 2 attach via magnets, then it would make sense for the the joysticks and triggers to also use magnets like the GuliKit controller

Magnets worry me, how strong are they that they don’t pop off while you play handheld but not so strong that they are easy to take off… maybe it still locks in? What I find annoying about the rails is I always end up pushing buttons on the joycons as I put them in the rails (especially if it’s docked. They’re so annoying to take on and off in dock mode.

my main concern about the magnet rumour is... hall effect. like, can a magnet be powerful enough to keep a controller attached while having a small enough magnetic field so that it wouldnt affect magnets in other parts of the controller?? but yeah im hoping the joycons still slide in so that i wont need to use my original switch to charge gen 1 joycons 😩
