Hi from Canada. I'm enjoying the channel and details. I have a 1980 drop head coupe that my dad bought new from the showroom in 1981. Since 1992 or so I have been the steward of this car, taking on small repairs and fixes as needed. Overall despite it being driven only around 1000 km in the last 20 years, it's still in good shape and its time to make her road worthy again. So this year I need to replace the fuel tank. I'll also replace rear suspension and various bits too. I'm looking forward to getting back into this car once winter goes away. Cheers.

Hey Red, nice and helpful video. I'll watch the whole thing when I get home. A great reference should I ever need it. Right now on my '77 my plastic clamp is broken (always has been) so I've been holding the assembly with one hand and engaging the signal stalk with the other. My plan is to add a custom metal bracket using existing stationary mounting points to prevent the whole assembly from rotating when engaging the signals. Thnx for the video.

I shotblasted my rear lamp enclosures, primered them, sprayed them black, bought some fancy chrome vinyl wrap and inlaid it in the ‘bowls’ and ended up with the same result. What a waste of my time 😂 Looking good, your vids keep reminding me of what I still have to do, switches were never on the radar but they are now! All the best 👍

Yeah, I did think about the chrome vinyl, but thought I'd just try some tinfoil. Headlamp bowls aside, as long as it's shiny it's good enough - the lenses diffuse the light enough for it to not make a difference. Worth doing the dash switches, they're easy enough to take apart and I know the headlight switch takes a lot of abuse. 👍

What was clever, but probably not new, the sloping perspex in front of dials.

Brings back memories of stripping switches and cleaning contacts back in the 80's. After the TR7 i had RX7, was amazed at the quality of parts compared to rusting parts on the TR. Although the RX eventually was scraped due rust and couple of Wankel rebuilds.

Hi Red, I’ve just subbed now that spring is on the way and you’re going to get on with the 7. - ( I’m particularly interested in the engine rebuild,so I hope you are making a serious effort and not going to just leave it rotting away in the garden just to accommodate the next car!)- so good luck buddy 🙏😊

Yeah, I was never a fan myself. I could live with the black/red ones, but all the other colours just aren't my style. Plain black is best IMO!

Firstly great videos, extremely useful. I'm a bit confused here - your indicator and wiper stalks are a different way round to mine (wipers on the right) - It looks like they were swapped at some stage in the manufacturing - pics of a 79 show them same as yours and another pic of a 79 shows them same as mine. So I'm wondering if they were manufactured like that or they'd been replaced post manufacture due to part availability issues. I'm finding the wiper part for mine is no longer available, the indicator still is. You mentioned mini, so I'm wondering if other cars Indicator and wiper stalk parts fit the TR7.

Yes, there was a change to the more modern type in (I think) 1980 or so. BL/Triumph tended to share parts around all their different cars, so the later type was probably used somewhere else as well.

In the case of the manual switch selector, maybe it would BE better to redo the entire cable with new Wire since is a small part.

If you mean the wiper switch, the problem there was that it's a crimp connection to a terminal that's not available individually, so it would have needed to be soldered somewhere anyway. In the end I replaced the entire switch.

Did you test the switches electrically for continuity when you finished?

I didn't see a lot of point tbh. They worked fine before I cleaned them - it was just a preventative thing - so I'm not anticipating any problems. If there does turn out to be any issues they'll reveal themselves when I do the wiring anyway.

Soak the brass electric connectors in muriatic acid to clean the ends...is a good option ..

Yes, most acids will work, even vinegar. I've cleaned brass with ketchup before 😆 I just used brasso because that's what I had closest to hand 🙂
