I totally agree. A flat swr on any given antenna means that particular antenna is going to perform its best. Doesn't mean that antenna is the best 😂👍

I have been on CB radio since early 70s. Back in then all i had was a SSB rig and a 102 in stainless whip. I had contacts all over there world all on 12 watts side band, so I agree antenna is key.

I drive a RAV4 and when I use my CB I have a Wilson 1000 hooked up to it which is mounted on the roof. The antenna is tuned for the CB band on channel 20 with the SWR usually 1.3 : 1. I use an MFJ 259B analyzer to tune the antenna as well.

If you want to talk everywhere, place it right, tune it right and get it up in the air!! If you want to hear more than what is near, "see above" and it will be pleasing to the ear!! Sounding off, for sound advice, is acceptable, relatable and totally common- sensible. 👊👊 😑🦗

Just might be the most misunderstood perception " swr is flat so I'm good"... Look forward to seeing upcoming videos on this..... maybe even show the components to making a swr meter read 1.0 on one of those compromised short length antennas and why the 102 inch ss whip still out perfoms almost everything else on the market today 73 Thank you

Greetings All. Yes, it's the simple things. Lowest possible SWR, along with a good antenna, mount, coax and ground. How many times have you said this? The power house radios will help get over the crap during busy times but you still need the simple things first. Liking the real world videos too, keep them coming. Safe travels Matt.

Assuming proper cable and connectors, it is all about the efficiency of the antenna. "Compromised" I.E inefficient radiator = poor signal out, and let's not forget poor receive signal capture as well. Good video!😊

Yes it can be difficult with newer trucks sometimes to get a good setup I prefer to be on a good mirror mount but sometimes in company trucks it’s hard to do everything you need to get a good ground from there and if you have slip seat guys driving your truck every so often that don’t care and rip things off on trees then that leaves you with the back of the cab which can give you a decent ground and SWR but not always the best RX/TX but it is about the best compromise I can still typically take 20 plus miles depending on the other drivers setup and when things are right and I am in the right spot talk skip Good video Matt hope to see more videos on this topic as I should be getting a new truck at work soon and I am always looking for a better antenna setup

Great video Matt I can remember you telling me , that it was the antenna that mattered when I bought my president Richard from you I use a Wilson 5000. I've talked out to California I've talked to Texas I've talked to arkansas, Alabama Carolinas and Florida. Antennas , length and good grounding. This summer I'm going to use the Superstar 9900 on a dipole. And see what I can do with that once again great video

Of course you are correct and I understand your point. Although swr is important for the protection from back fed current to radio but you are also correct that the antenna has to match the optimal operating frequency. Naturally a 5/8 gain is going to out perform a 1/4 wave antenna or a 1/8 wave. One cannot lose sight of the 1/2 wave of 11 meters is a little over 17 feet. The gain of the antenna is just as important as the impedance.

Yes, I've also noticed where you place the antenna on a vehicle matter. Especially with the newer vehicles. I have a 2024 Nissan Rogue if I put my Wilson 1000 on the back of the vehicle above the hatch, they're dead flat. If I move the magnet mount towards the center of the roof the swr,s are sky high and I pick all kind of noise up from the car.Boy, I hope we see more videos like this.Thanks matt awesome video loved it Peace and love to all

I pay more attention to resonate frequency. That and coax lengths an quality. In my case I run 150 plus ft. So you could almost unhook the antenna and get a low swr.

I have one of those antennas on my wife's car. It was the bargain I made to get a radio in there. However, I will say if your plan is to have a radio that can communicate in a 5 mile radius and not be blasted by skip all day, that might not be a bad antenna. We only use the radio for very local talk she can squelch it, and we can still talk she doesn't care about other people. If you're not concerned about being a skip talker and talking across the county, it isn't bad.

Quick question. I’m getting a 1.3 on 20,40,&1. I’m in a freightliner cascadia with a perch mount and a 7’ skipshooter antenna. At highway speeds my swr’s jump up to 1.8-2.0. Is this normal?
@Chris715_73s

I ran that same setup with around 50 watts. The best I could tune to was 1.3 and still be resonate. I double-grounded everything (mount, doors, cab, and radio) and had no problems at speed but would go over 2 if I opened the door. If I were you and you haven't, ground everything metal. (This was a day cab BTW)

You’re right. A full wave antenna has the best TX and RX. When I went to school for my EET degree we learned antenna design and length calculation for desired frequency range and one important aspect is the bare wire must contact air for optimal efficiency. So many companies sell nylon coating half wave or quarter wave antennas.

I see so many people spend good money on a really nice radio and stick it in a truck that has horrible SWR. then a month 2 months down the road the finals are smoked. My advice to most new people is a stock Cobra 29 verify your SWR then by the nice radio. Another rule of thumb if you can't receive you probably can't transmit

False argument blaming low swr for your crappy antenna. Don't blame your car for the shitty ride when you put $25 tires on it.
