Superlativi.Bighin Giulio. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I think they make a magical, passionate couple. Juliet is in my opinion one of the greatest parts (along with Manon where she recently gave the performance of a lifetime at La Scala in Milan and Giselle) in Sylvie's career, both in the MacMillan version and the Nureyev version. I have seen her live in both and to my mind she is the ideal Juliet, girlsih, passionate, romantic, beautiful beyond any words of description. With her you see the young girl growing into a woman passionate in love.

Romeo and Juliet's story can best be told through this BALLET!! Thank you Prokofiev, Macmillan (and Shakespeare!)

You just exaggerate Jan. R.Nureyev was very familiar with JR 1940 Kirov version by Lavrovski then he danced 1965 K. MacMillan version. Feeling what is not good in both versions R.Nureyev created 1977 his RJ version for London Festival Ballet. This version is much better fom K .MacMillan RJ and is possible even today to see in POB. Young Hugo Marchand was last Romeo and was quite good, and now he is etoile of POB. Royal Spanish Ballet, Madrid has new briliant vesion of RJ. Joze Martinez direcor of Madrid ballet was etoil of POB and he was fantastic Romeo in Nureyev Paris produstion. So from leg to leg every new production of RJ is better and better. And that is not the end of line...

Well, I guess there's no accounting for differences in perception and taste. I found Jonathan's interpretation to be by far the most natural, convincing, and touching of all the males I have see dance this specific pas de deux. For Sylvie, what I think is extraordinary here, if I may say, is that she is at once the consumate fluid, lyrical dancer, but at the same time is demonstrating the purest of classical lines at every turn. Usually you get one or the other, not both at the same time! Very special indeed.

Well Jan, I do remember even today that season in RB and how much better was Christopher Gable as Romeo from R.Nureyev. That premiere was greatest scandal in R.Nureyev whole career. Christopher Gable quit ballet due this scandal. That is too part of glorious history of RJ in Royal Ballet and Rudolf Nureyev as Romeo. C.Gable today is practically forgotten. He was one of finest British dancers.

m. ivancevic Hi again! I must look for Christopher Gable. I'm not familiar with him. Do you like Anthony McDowell, Farouk Rumitozov? My favorite prima ballerina from Royal Ballet..Lynn Seymour!! SUCH a stunning dancer! I am not at all familiar with the Rudolph Nureyev/Christopher Gable Romeo and Juliet 'scandal' you refer to. I don't understand what the scandal was and am interested in learning about it. (It does surprise me, though, that you prefer someone else's performance of Romeo over Nureyev's) 😊 Jan

Lynn Seymour and Christopher Gable was brutally replaced on the day of RJ premiere without explanation and against will of choreographer. Was huge pressure of RB menagment that R.Nurevey has to dance premiere. It is much more interesting to follow how RJ evolued in time, what choreographer change due time and new standards of dance and personality and possibilities of each new generation of his dancers. This fine evolution of his ballet is most interesting to follow. It is ridules to compare artist from different time even in some role and in some choreography.

m. ivancevic Hi! Your note regarding the development and evolving of RJ over the years with different choreographers and ballet companies is interesting, m. ivancevic. The various newer productions sound intriguing and I do hope I will be able to find them on KZitem! By the way, I had someone else in mind when I mistakenly referred to Anthony Dowell as McDowell!!) It's so nice to hear from you. However, I do not think I exaggerate when I say that I find Nureyev incomparable even to this day. BUT!, I have not seen the dancers you mention so perhaps I should reserve my point of view until I DO! Best regards, Jan 😉 Note: Future notes from you are always welcome! 😉

it is SO great to see more videos with Cope, who until i saw Polunin, was my fave male ballet dancer. what a fabulous partner. his lifts are effortless. one of my biggest ballet regrets is not seeing him live.

Lara Hartley Hi Lara! I do love Alessandra Ferri dancing this..I, too, think perhaps she is best in the role. She is such a singular dancer, but so is Sylvie. Overall Sylvie is my favorite ballet dancer (I THINK??!!) but I do think Ferri out dances even HER in this pas de deux. So silly of me...impossible really to have a number one favorite. There are soooo many gifted ones! But for me there is still no other as brilliant a male dancer as Rudolph Nureyev! Love Anthony McDowell, Farouk Razimatov, Miguel Legris...but Nureyev was a singularly gifted artist. 😊 Jan

I am sorry to have to mention that J Cope was a good dancer but is an hopeless actor He was fine as a Prince or in parts that were just dancing but in the Macmillan and Ashton pas de deux such as this one Manon - Firebird and Month in the Country which call for dramatic acting as well as dancing ability -he fails miserably

sorry to mention? what that you have dodgy eyesight. Cope was a natural, no over acting just pure emotion which in Manon was outstanding, the pair were made for each other.
