Major Spoiler alert: Suzanne Colins is a master of irony. The entire trilogy is full of irony that almost everything that everyone wants to do is ultimately failed. Prim only has one ticket and Katniss has a bunch of them, yet prim is the one who got pick at the reaping. Katniss volunteered to save her sister, her sister died at the end. Gale just want to protect Katniss and everyone he loves, he ended up hurting her the most. Katniss just wanted to avoid camera and publicity, yet she is always on the face of everything. They all thought working for district 13 is their best way out, yet district 13 is only a copy of capitol. All Katniss wanted to do at the war was kill Snow, yet she never got to do that. The Hunger games was trying to divide the district, yet it brought them all together for the revolution. And Lucy Gray wrote the song for Coryo so that they can run away together, yet it ended up being the song that overthrows him.

Hey! This is awesome and I love the examples yu used! I would like to point out a minor detail. Katniss was actually supposed to kill Snow and she was about to do it in front of everyone but she than decided Coin (district 13) was the same, like you said. She ended up shooting Coin instead so you are technacly right but she did have a chance that wasn't taken away from her like the phrose "never got to" May insinuate. This is a super insicnificant detail but I just thought I'd point it out. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

In the book they said they did not use the song as propo. It is why they were able to use the song to get Peeta to remember a positive/neutral memory (Peeta heard her dad sing it). Because they did not use the song the capitol could not remake the memory into something else.

this is not important at all but i believe the reason district 12 tributes all had bad costumes before cinna is bc they just didn’t care about the poorest district. i can’t remember if this was a popular head cannon or actually cannon but i believe cinna particularly chooses district 12 or katniss bc he’s inspired by her

“Many of the other stylists have had claim to other districts for years, and Cinna, being relatively new and unknown, looked to 12 as both a challenge and an opportunity, a district that has been essentially ignored and poorly represented from a fashion and design point of view. He knew he could make the greatest mark there-and with Katniss he finds a willing collaborator.” is what Suzanne has said about his choice. do not really inspired by her but he chooses them to challenge himself, but i’m guessing he also gets in the rebellion plan & was one of the biggest faces behind katniss’ rebellion.

I just finished listening to the three books on audio read by Tatiana Maslany (first time reading, after seeing the movies). It was such an intense experience-the acting and direction made the words come to life so vividly. It became clear Katniss has so many levels of humanity. How richly she was written with all her doubts, gray areas, and burgeoning wisdom. My takeaway from the final book was how wars largely are colossal wastes. How they end up battering and beating down every person they touch, without bringing any value to humanity. In an interview I saw it was so interesting to hear the author explain how her father left when she was six years old to fight in the Vietnam war. Watching the war on TV and knowing her dad was in there somewhere she said was terrifying. Vietnam was the first televised war, a fact that doesn’t escape irony in light of how far the world of Panem has come televising violence. And another interview I saw with Donald Sutherland it was also ironic to hear that he likened his character to Lyndon Johnson (in his words, a leader who has nothing but the most laudable, positive view of himself despite ordering bombings in Vietnam). I read some complaints of the how the love story was resolved. I thought it was perfectly natural that in a fog of trauma she eventually realized the man who stuck around caring for her was the best fit. In life often you have to find the right person and at the right time. She was just trying to feed her family and survive a revolution (and was only 17)-how else would you expect someone to act? It was only after maturing and living through stages of grief would she start to see things differently. When I was processing the books one of the things that came to me was remembering the autobiography Miep Gies wrote. She was one of the main helpers who hid Otto Frank and his family and friends from the Nazis. She tells one of the most gripping stories I’ve ever read-from being an office clerk answering letters of customers who needed instructions how to make jelly, to defying Nazi laws on a daily basis to bring food and comfort to the people hiding in the Annex. After the families were discovered, under threat of her life, she sweet-talked the police officer into giving her a few precious moments to salvage Anne Frank’s diaries, and later tried to bribe the police to get the family back. You would think the discovery of the Franks would be the low point, but the winter that followed in Amsterdam was called the “hunger winter” where people were so desperate they were breaking front doors off houses for firewood, and she tells how she rode her bicycle for hours into the country looking for farmers who had some food she could bring back. After the war she reunited with Otto Frank but found out that everyone, including Anne, was dead. Even after so much, she had to keep on going after that too, to live with the unthinkable pain of surviving. She married and had a baby and lived to 100. She is maybe the best example I can think of where an every day person transformed into a agent of change, supporting humanity in the small way she could during some of the darkest days of our history, and coming out the other end still moving forward. That’s largely what these books are about…well also they are trying to warn us how society could shift towards an unrecoverable crisis if we lose our connection and empathy towards each other. The jury is still out on that one…

What? I remember being so overcome by sadness after Rue's death. She was so important because she represents innocence. The very thing that was robbed out of these children and what was taken from the people and Katniss. She is the catalyst, yes.. but she represents so much more than that to me. Like Prim, they were very tragic deaths that took place for a sad reason. 😢
