The most common cancer affecting women in the world is breast cancer. In India, breast cancer is most common in women between the age group of 45 to 50. According to the national average, in 1 lakh women in the country, 29.5 percent are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Not all breast cancers are cancerous. But such tumors should never be ignored as they are a symptom of breast cancer. There are two ways to identify whether you have breast cancer. One is self-breast examination and the other is a medical examination. Self-examination of the breasts can help to detect the presence of lumps or tumors in the breasts. But self-examination is never equivalent to the medical examination.
The stage at which cancer is detected also plays a major role in curing it. If detected at an early stage, treatment can cure 98% to 100% of the disease. This is up to 90 percent in the second phase, up to 70 percent in the third phase and up to 40 percent in the fourth phase. Therefore, it is very important to detect and seek treatment for cancer at an early stage. Dr. Misha JC Babu, Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery, Breast Diseases Division, Amrita Hospital, Kochi, explains the symptoms of breast cancer, how to diagnose it and how to treat it.
