They have a limited budget for VR games, and while I'm sure they're willing to take a loss here and there (probably lost a lot on Horizon), for the most part they're only going to spend money on a VR game that they think they can make back. With less than 1 million PSVR 2's in players hands at the moment, they aren't going to give many VR games huge budgets for the time being. They also probably wanted Synapse to come out fairly early in the PSVR 2's lifecycle, and bigger games with better production values take more time to develop.

A very easy game to extend the playtime of. Should have had multiple modes to achieve certain target scores on runs. Beat times. Have final boss events and let you only fight one boss at the end of a run, so you have to do multiple runs to clear all bosses and get a true ending. Keep in mind that the length of playtime in any roguelike/lite is heavily based on player skill (and often RNG, but it seems like that's less present here). Not only is GT very skilled, but he had a few hours of practice on a demo of this game before getting the final version. I'd bet it'd take most people longer to beat, but that'll vary per person. Fwiw, the VR Grid estimated most players would take 8-12 hours.

Other reviewers say it takes about 10 hours to get the final ending. It takes 3 runs I think. It's still a short game, but it does have some of those exend playtime elements. Great review as always! Im waiting for a sale if i even get this one at all. Im beyond confused as to why a choice was made to end a roguelike so short? Per instance , in death on psvr 1. I loved that game. Even though there was 3 or 4 enemy types and a couple bosses. You basically chased your score with escalating difficulty. And leaderboards. That kind of approach would make this a classic hit id think. Not everything has to be a AAA blockbuster title. There is a scoring/ranking system of sorts for each level, but I don't know if the game retains your scores to show you your top score for each level, which is sort of essential for replayability. I appreciate this review, but I feel like GT's experience might not be the same as most people's picking the game up for the first time. Most Roguelike/lite games can be beaten very quickly if the player is skilled enough, and from what I've seen, GT is a very skilled gamer. More than that, he'd already played the demo of Synapse (for a few hours iirc) before getting the full version, so he'd essentially had a number of runs under his belt when he started. I'd bet the average gamer would get at least a few hours more out of the final game, which seemed like the main negative of this review. Another review I just watched estimated it'd take players 8-12 hours to complete the game, though that might've been overstating it. Important to bear in mind.

This seems to be more fun than Horizon the climbing tech demo for £60. Synapse does not have a fully flushed story but neither did Returnal (£60 release)one of my favourite pancake games. The choices of progression and returning with different kills did, imo. I have pre ordered and for the price I never did expect a fully flushed story or long game. I feel the fun factor has been over shadowed by what could of been if the devs had more time and money.
@GAMERTAGVR

To be respectful, I don’t think anyone missed the point. We simply have an opinion based on experience. On a personal note Returnal offers much more of a replay-ability pull due to the mystery and story and skill demand. You won’t find any of that here. You will beat this easily and it will only get easier as you unlock perks. I played this game in every way possible within 5 hours. There is only two perks left to unlock meaning, I killed in every combination possible. The credits rolled in under 3 hours. I never said it wasn’t worth the price. It’s a great game and feels fabulous to play, but I don’t think I’ll ever want to play it for myself again or at least in the near future. You can’t choose a path. Yeah VR is stuck in a weird chicken-and-egg/catch-22 right now. There isn't a big enough audience for games to get decent sized budgets or development resources (nowhere near triple-A) which usually leads to smaller or less well polished games, and without triple-A games the audience grows much more slowly. It's a hard cycle to break. I think for myself and a lot of other people, the big hope for PSVR 2 was that it'd get a lot of hybrid games (VR added into a flat game, like Gran Turismo 7 or Resident Evil 8), but there haven't been too many of those yet. Hopefully as the headset sells more, we'll get more of those sorts of games, and smaller developers like nDreams here also get more resources to make bigger games. 🤞

You experienced the late game in a Roguelite. Ofc it’s going to be fun. Early game you can’t do half that stuff and early on it’s honestly a pain in the ass until you get the good upgrades shown in the video.

I loved my experience with Synapse. The story and length are not great, but the feeling and unique action are top. I prefer these shorter games, because then I have finished just when I still feel great about the game. With a lot of non VR games, they make games so long, that after a while I am not enjoying what I thought was a perfect game anymore, because it is being prolonged all the time. In my opinion, the length of a game should not influence the grade the game gets, but should ne a notification in the review. For me Synapse would be a 8,5.

Fair play GT. I'll definitely wait for a sale unless you get some keys to give away and i'm lucky! I'm done paying £30 for theses games with short gameplay. I'm playing FF16 at the moment, £55 and it's mammoth. Yes it's flat from a big studio but i'm getting my monies worth. I'm really looking forward to Asgards Wrath 2. over 60 hours of content in (whats looking like )a high end VR game for £45 i'm in. I really wish nDreams would take an extra year with their games and produce a top notch game. They definitely have the talent to do so. Next up, Sierra Crossfire Squad.

Looks fun to me , but also looks like a TEST to see if people can handle using eye tracking mixed with regular shooter controls . Possible doesn’t mean willing , using the eye tracking in games outside of foveated is gonna be a weird shift of tossing control systems with it incorporated prolly gonna be slow . Slower if this game breaks people’s brains , gonna have sit back to see how they do . I am hoping take like a duck to water and can just push forward , but nervous to go through review gauntlet to see how reviewers took to it lol . You prolly barely noticed any difficulty with using , hoping that is the average response

@@bengreenwood1734 Hmm, I don't own RE Village or Walking Dead, I have the others. I'm just not convinced yet. I love the headset, but I do get dizzy or nauseous from time to time, and yet I don't feel I can get that full-on game experience. It all feels like gimmicky. Stellaris is pretty awesome and Id love to see RTS game utilize the full potential of VR. I know PS4 had one with the camera but they don't have anything like that yet. Maybe a good solid RPG. Say Baldurs Gate 3 but utilizing the power of VR. I absolutely adobe Demeo, it's fantastic and it makes awesome use of VR, I just think the game needs more levels and some serious rebalancing. There are too many enemies roaming around to get your bearings, it's pretty chaotic. Moss looks and feels great but the VR elements are minimal. It's in its infancy but they still need that killer app.

Over the top, cartoony laser sights and tracer rounds take all the difficulty and reward out of VR gunplay. Laser pointers make it feel like a flatscreen shooter where you have a reticle showing exactly where the bullet is going to hit when you pull the trigger. Tracer rounds make it inevitably more practical to aim with your bullets like a 3rd person shooter than to use your gun's sights. Takes all the fun and uniqueness of shooting guns in VR.

Here is the sad truth. There just isn’t enough money in VR to develop huge long high quality VR only games. We’re either going to get good VR games that are shorter or hybrid games that were originally meant for flat screen and translated to VR. That is it. There hasn’t been a game like Half Life Alyx since Alyx and there isn’t one currently in development. It just doesn’t make financial sense for a company to spend that much time and money on a VR only game right now. So, I’ll enjoy Synapse for what it is and wait for Resident Evil 4 VR and other hybrid games for longer experiences. That’s just how it is right now.

As Someone who just got a PSVR2 this ain't looking good I've already wasted $30 on some of the games THAT SHOULD HAD BEEN $10 or $20. Horizon Climb of the mountain shoukd had been Kill Zone in VR cause that would be sick buuuuut no 90% climbing and 10% shooting robot dinosaurs like who thought that was a good idea they don't even give you an arena mode where you can just shoot dinosaurs it's all just climbing thankfully my arms got used to it so I don't mind it but that still don't take away from the fact that the game is boring, it's just a fancy tech demo. Thankfully resident evil 8 has a VR mode to scratch that full length story mode and gun gameplay itch , this vr is feeling like a bad $600 investment dokt why sony just didnt make a damn PS VITA 2 instead.

Sony needs to listen if they want the psvr2 to succeed! We’re done with the short story short demos they sell us. It’s enough! It’s 2023 and people play games to enjoy the story the experience the gameplay. Constantly making every psvr game a demo 2-4 hour experience is a disgrace. Raise your prices to $60-70 give us at the minimum 12 hour campaigns on vr and go all out. Enough with the demo experience. That’s the biggest complaint I see from psvr gamers, “it’s too short it’s another demo!” This is a next gen console. PlayStation do better. This game like alyx deserves a long campaign if not much longer. I’m hoping the sequel will be that, a 12 hour campaign and we move on from there. Psvr needs to start going thst route. Not to mention more horror games and port house of the dead franchise, virtua cop, time crisis :series, to the psvr 2. We need more games and triple a exclusive games.
