I really do love movies like this, but the older I get, and the more I realize about life and the world, the less I want to watch them. Most of the time I just want to watch something blissfully simple. V_V

This film feels like slowly being pulled into one nightmare within another. I used to get this reoccurring dream that I was going about my normal life when things and places would just start falling over like stage props and I'd realize it was all just a set on a stage in the void, setup to mock me, but no one or nothing was real. I think it was inspired by this film.

I want to see this now. I was led here by a review by this guy, roger ebert. I don't really like extreme movie criticism, so the comments below are kind of ridiculous. Why can't people just enjoy more intellectually stimulating films AND enjoy LESS intellectually stimulating films? As long as it's fun to watch, what's the point of making such obsessive critiques?? (It really upsets me).

i hope to post enough comments to move patmathis's criticism off the front page, because "croch full of VD" should never be associated with any movie, not even Transformers 2, let alone a masterpiece like Synechdoche. I understand we all have different taste, but I thought It was such a beautiful film and am shocked that someone out there could have such a toxic reaction as patmathis did below. It's very sad but I have nothing but love in my heart for Synechdoche and Pat.

Kaufman is a master at capturing bleak truths and turning them into a 24/7 reality. But is that a good thing? Yes pain suffering and ultimately death are life - but so is flowers blooming in spring. These types of movies might be artistic, but what affect do they have on people who are on the edge? I believe it pushes some to suicidal tendencies - Kaufman’s creations while brilliant steal a little bit of the soul, to high a fee for the admission.

At the risk of sounding like a pretentious hipster (which I probably am to be honest) to me, this movie is similar to that quote from Infinite Jest about how little control you have over your life. "almost nothing important that ever happens to you happens because you engineer it. Destiny has no beeper; destiny always leans trench coated out of an alley with some sort of 'psst' that you usually can't even hear because you're in such a rush to or from something important you've tried to engineer."

This movie is so fast pace but feels slow at the same time. I did not understand half of the movie but you won't feel completely lost if that makes sense. I feel like I understand the movie but I also don't. It's weird. This is not a type of movie to watch for it's entertainment value but more for it's atmosphere and philosophical view.
