----Detailed Information----
This model is the newer version of the DS1515+ released a few years ago. Whilst it does contain the same Atom CPU, it comes with a refreshed chassis design offering 10Gbe or M.2 SSD expansions options this time around.
This Network Attached Storage in particular will mainly be used for backing up my KZitem media, personal photos, videos, files and also used for virtualisation and web hosting.
Specs of the DS1517+ NAS
Intel Atom C2538 Quad Core with a 2.4 GHz frequency
8GB DDR3 Dual Channel RAM
3x 6TB IronWolf NAS HDDs
2x 3TB Western Digital Red HDDs
Single volume in an SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID array) providing me with 18TB raw storage and 6TB redundancy.
Please remember that RAID is NEVER a backup and for all of your important data you should be using the 3-2-1 backup method. This means having the data in 3 separate locations, one of them being off site somewhere else.
Some of the main features I use on the NAS are the following:
- USB Copy: This allows me to copy data from an SD card to a folder via an automated task I created.
- Cloud Sync: This allows me to sync my GDrive data to the NAS.
- Plex: I use the NAS as a media server for photos and videos
- Docker: This provides me with virtualisation options that I can use
- iSCSI LUN: I can host my Steam game library on the NAS and play games directly from it. See my 2 part video on how to do this.
All questions and feedback are welcome.
