I have a pair of steel "tweezers" with flat tips that curve inward towards each other. It was made for pulling IC chips out of their sockets. It works great on pressed-on knobs that aren't too large in diameter. With the tweezers, you're evenly pulling the knob from two sides at once, and it doesn't tilt the knob or shaft to one side. In principle, it operates a bit like a simplified gear puller. It was a huge help when I used to repair large mixing consoles with scores of pressed-on knobs! 🙂 Oh, one other little tip, especially if you're new to electronic repair. Always look for the presence of set screws on a knob BEFORE you start pulling on it. Also, some knobs have not only one set screw, but two of them, typically located 90 degrees apart from each other. If you see a set screw in a knob, always check to see if a second set screw also exists in that knob. Like Carlos says, you can damage something by trying to pull off knobs that are held in place with set screws. Those set screws (all of them) must be loosened before the knob comes off.

I usually get the pot knobs off using a piece of shoe lace. Just wrap it around the the knob (or under if there's room), hold tight and pull up. This allows for a firm grip without acting too much as a lever. This way you're less likely to snap brittle plastic pot axles and it does not scratch the panel surface at all.

Great Synth Tip series. Looking forward to more tips! I would like to see your advice on cleaning older scratchy pots and sliders. Also repairing paint scratches or. chassis rust spots.

This! The whole 'use Deoxit' thing - needs addressing as I understand that Deoxit D5 often isn't the right thing to use on pots?!

Those plastic shaft pots are scary looking... I can’t imagine the shock of having one break on a memory moog.

The Prophet 5 is like that too.

6581punk yikes, I wonder if these plastic pots have a specific function other than being a variable resistor, or otherwise why they went with these.

@@graxjpg they are much tougher than you think ... have you actually desoldered any of these potentiometers?

Haze Anderson I have replaced them in consumer electronics for having been broken off, but those knobs attached are usually of greater weight and mileage than those found on a synth.
