He'll label every Syrian opposed to Assad as more or a less "terrorist". If your friend is a Syrian Kurd, he'll be slightly opposed to Assad but heavily opposed to all rebels and Turkey. If your friend is a supporter of the Syrian revolution, he might be able to give you the picture of brutalities orchestrated by the regime, and, obviously, he'll be vehemently opposed to Assad and his regime.

This CTC on the Middle East meddle is, I’m afraid, recluttering rather than decluttering. May be you wanted to be very conservative in approaching the subject, may be you preferred to be politically correct over the real issues. In order to declutter one needs to start with the origin of Islam itself, or at the least from the massacre of Karbala. The more logical approach could be to start with the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire by the Brits, who have wreaked havoc with every region they have exited from, after the WW-I. More realistically one could start with the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini who single handedly demolished the equilibrium in that part of the world which withstood even the Arab Israeli wars. The opportunistic divisions of the Ottoman Empire, the scramble for fossil fuel, the search for allies by both parties of the Cold War and the anti Israeli ideology created a deadly plot over which three nations have been fighting to seize the leadership of the Muslim World. These nations are Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey all of whom bring their own history, culture and religious sectarianism to the table. Add Pakistan to this muddle which goes around shopping in the arena with hordes of mercenaries to peddle with the Bomb as a logo. The stage is so complex it would frankly need several episodes of CTC to declutter. The Kurd problem can not be understood without unravelling the British strategy of dividing the Kurds between four states. The dynamics of relations between all the states belonging to the entire Arab World need to be discussed in the background of the history of Islam in order to properly analyse the murderous chaos. I would rather have you begin with the Ayatollah than the currently fashionable landmark of 9/11. The other important development bearing considerable weightage on the chaos is the rather curious alignment of the current left wing leaderships the world over with the radical Ismalists, something which should be a terrible anathema to an ideology which rejects all organised religions. I would love to hear you on this thaw between two directly opposite phenomena. Though I’m aware CTC generally dwells on the pathology of issues avoiding prescription of any sort, I would dare to suggest that to sort out the never ending chaos nothing sort of a Second Westphalia like commune of the entire world would be needed. Unfortunately, while Treaty of Westphalia was the outcome of negotiations between all the suffering nations that controlled the world affairs at the time, this muddle is controlled by the great powers lying comfortably outside the chaotic territory but holding all stakes in play. Someday I would love to hear your, and others who care, views on this aspect.

The current issues in the Middle East have nothing to do with the origin of Islam. Islam actually united the Middle East, and under Islam the Middle East achieved its golden age.
@tjena5772
4 жыл бұрын
Umar Tahir You are right and wrong at the same time. It brought, not United by sense, the Middle East under unified rule initially but later on divided it systematically mainly for quest of power and control over the religion. It remained progressive in the Middle Ages until Western Europe ushered in Renaissance and Reformation. The time when Europe opened itself to reason and science, Islam world went retrograde and has been going there ever since.
@UmarTahir
4 жыл бұрын
@@tjena5772 Ok, sure, I can agree that the Islamic world has been in decline since about the last few centuries. But as you explain, those issues began much later after Islam's founding, so then these modern-day problems did not start with Islam's founding. The Middle East was divided before Islam, sure, & then remains divided today. Islam brought the region under unification for a brief period of time though, so these problems are mostly a result of the imperialism of the last few centuries as you explain in your original comment
@tjena5772
4 жыл бұрын
Umar Tahir Agree with that brother. My point though is Islam hasn’t done anything significant to arrest that decline. In stead it’s going steadily backward in response to find solutions by further closing itself from the modern world. I am pained to find that people who understand history, the few public intellectuals from the community, are unwilling or overpowered by the statusquoists to steer it towards scientific modernism.
@UmarTahir
4 жыл бұрын
@@tjena5772 Yes, I totally agree there too. I think the problem is somewhat rooted in our theological scholarship. Muslims look to the Islamic religious scholarship of the Golden Age as its own body of self-contained knowledge that should never be challenged, when in fact, Muslim scholars back then would disagree openly but amicably. Now, Islamic scholarship has become divisive and Muslims have divided themselves not just into religious but political sects too (like in the Middle East). As a result, since they've become theologically impervious to different opinions, they've also become impervious to change in general. I think that Muslims should not glorify the Golden Age but instead really study what ideals drove the Islamic world and learn from them. When you accept your past, you can move on into the future. And I also agree that the Muslim world has rejected its academics for too long. Thank you for your insight! It has encouraged me to reflect on this topic more, and provided me a new framework to analyze the Muslim world's mindset!

Your point about Russian involvement is totally wrong. Putin did not ally with Assad just now and out of some 'delusion' as you put it. Mind you he is the greatest geopolitical chess master the world has seen in recent times. The reason Russia entered the civil war was because Russia's only warm water port and only port in the Mediterranean was in Tartus in Syria, also Russia always had an airbase in Latakia. All of this from the times of Assad's father. Had Assad fallen the sunni islamists backed by US would have forced Russia to withdraw. Also he was one of the main people pushing Erdogan to invade northern Syria because then the kurds, who controlled 1/3rd of Syrian territory and were unwilling to reconcile with Assad for the dream of an independent kurdish state backed by US, were forced to make peace and surrender to Assad and Russia to protect themselves from Turkish onslaught after abandonment by Americans. So basically Putin won back 1/3 territory of Syria for Assad without firing a single shot.

This was very well uncluttered Shekharji... A friendly suggestion-- I think it would be more prudent to know what is actually happening out there(in the middle east), if we see it through an economic lens. In Syria, things started going bad primarily because of massive urbanizations in Syria.. 3 cities--- Aleppo, Damascus and Homs. Basr Al Assad had done something on farming or agriculture.. most of the civil war happened on the outskirts of the cities-- bidonwales Another thing I must mention-- Assad is in power because he had the Airforce department(It is a department in the armed forces and has nothing to do with the Airforce) This is great piece for you to build on... middle east is supremely interesting.

You took the name Saudi Arabia after 14 mins (Al-Saud family is the most powerful family in the middle east). When you say the islands of stability, Saudi Arabia is at the top, followed by UAE, Qatar, and Oman. These countries have remained unaffected by any uprisings, and also there is a smooth transition of power from one king to other. Even in Iran, the Shah was overthrown due to an earlier uprising. Secondly, Putin just not showed up in the conflict from nowhere, but was invited by Assad thereby not violating international laws. But US did violate by invading Syria and they have to move out.

China is the world power today because is the US. It has used the US beautifully. India must do the same . Cause at the end of the day there's only one superpower and it's the US.

Maybe you can declutter the global hunger index 2019. No one is apparently speaking about it. NDTV did a small capsule

Because the hunger index isn't what its name tell you. Apparently 89% american college students are hungry, which seems odd but is true.

Excellent back-office Analysis which explains the fundamental information of the issue. This region is the ground for future Conflicts due to Turkish & American greed. The Kurds have been backstabbed again. Nathan Sekhar Sydney, Australia.

Quite an informative essay Sekhar ji, but you need some additional & better reference material for sure. I say this from my 29 years of life experience in the Middle East. You have glaringly missed on the definitive US and Saudi covert roles in the last 3 decades (the quest for control of Energy resources), you called Putin as delusional, you missed on the basic fabric of tribal architecture that is so dominant there and much more that bears a direct impact on most of these States, and few such critical geo-political aspects. Good effort to de-clutter but not the best. My sincere regards Gentleman.

Very Good Article in de-cluttering meshed up GULF and well described as usual the personal touch by Mr. Shekhar Gupta adds a extra point to his presentations.. One suggestion is to have a episode on Turkey alone aftermath of Turks supported PAK in UNGA and many international forums. PM Modi also met armenia and greece Govt official/ministers at UNGA. Please try to accommodate an episode in de-cluttering India's deplomacy(what it is now and what it should be) for Turkey.

ShekharJi, Turks who came to India, or invaded India, did not come from Turkey, they were Turkic people, from Central Asia, a power that arose about 15 centuries ago, when the Turkic Commander of the Mongol Khagan broke away from him and formed his own empire, he founded the Ashina Clan and his name was Bumin and the identity of his people was Gokturk(lBlue Sky Turks), these Turkic people later went westward and settled in the Eurasian Steppe and also conquered the Anatolia as well as what is today Bulgaria. They had also moved into what is today Afghanistan, and centuries later helped form a lot of Afghan identities, including the Pashtuns, who also dwell in the Pakistani North West.
