For those not wanting to fork out that wad of money weld your own. If you are not a welder, go find a welder in the area, in a Mennonite or Amish area they'll direct you to whom can make a stainless pan like that for you and it won't be nearly so expensive. We had one made and made my own brick furnace for the pan to sit on. Have less than two hundred fifty bucks invested.

So my frugal side is kicking in. $1300 seems like a lot of money for what appears to be a wood burning stove with a stainless steel box on top. I really dont see any difference between the two. Why not re purpose a larger wood burner for this? I would think your setup with the block and grate you use for the pressure canner would work too with the stainless pan on top? Im sure the pan can be purchased as an add on to this setup and a lot cheaper. Just a thought. Thanks again for sharing this, it is interesting though.

$1300 is not expensive for something that you can use to make *pure* maple syrup. Go look at the price of Maple Syrup then come back and try complaining... Add to that you can make sorghum, as well as can your own foods. smh If I had maple trees to tap, I'd certainly be bothering to get something like this.

You should line the inside with fire brick, this way the heat is directly hitting the pan.

Always amused to hear "Amish built" when talking about welded steel evaporators or machined brass pumps. How do you think an Amish metal mill or lathe in an Amish machine shop runs? How do you think an Amish tig welder operates? I'm not saying these aren't good products but if the Amish label is why you're buying, uh, don't. I've worked with Amish and Mennonite people in construction and manufacturing. The Amish don't use many screws because they don't have drills. Think about that.

I was just curious about something because I want to buy this same set up. What if you surrounded the back and sides with cinderblocks stacked up level with the bottom of the pan and filled the blocks with sand. I'd think that would make it really retain the heat in the stove. I was also wondering about getting a piece of cast iron or something that you could put on top in place of the evaporation pan to use as a cast iron griddle. Then you could use it as a complete outdoor kitchen instead of having a seperate brick oven. I'm thinking all in one. What do you think?

Just a tip: to clean it or Any Pots with years of burnt on grease and tar like you're house hold pots and pans use easy-off oven cleaner, you want believe how easy they come clean as brand new in 5 min. of you're time. I could not believe how quick and easy it cleaned all my pot after years of scrubbing to no avail.

Great review. I would also agree with your improvements or if they would even offer it as an extra option. I am amazed at the price as well. Thanks for the review and video. Outdoor kitchen looks great man.

Time will tell if I am wrong, or maybe the first reply here; it's a shorter bed so the long sides also get warm. If it fit perfectly, the sides would get cold(er).

Have you looked into doing different types of tree sap based syrups? I know maple takes the ribbon in that race, but if you have the equipment already, you could branch out (ha) and utilize it even more
@Anamericanhomestead
8 жыл бұрын
The problem is that with other trees, you have to collect twice as much or sometimes 4 times as much just to get syrup. That is why maple wins the race. People throughout history have often tried to find ways to get sugar. The trick is to get the sugar with as little effort as possible. If you have Maple and Sorghum, wasting time on the other sap methods that require more effort is simply wasting time. :)

"Wood Fired Evaporator" is the *Key* words required to find anything resembling the evaporator like the one in the video. So, I suggest that you use those key words in Ebay search.
