“T” (‘Shri Yantra’)was especially written for the twenty year anniversary of the recorder festival in Mechelen (Belgium). It is a piece for twenty recorders: four quartets of soprano recorders and a quartet of bass recorder players that surround the audience in a kind of square: four quartets of soprano recorder players in every corner, with four bass recorder players in between each quartet, playing a ‘cantus firmus’ like melody. Ideally, the piece would be performed as a kind of flash mob, ‘ambushing’ the audience… Although it is possible to perform the piece with a conductor, it is not strictly necessary. In fact, the piece could be performed equally effectively with a click track or stopwatch, perhaps even using earplugs, as it is not important to hear each other if all the players have an in-ear click track.
The score was prepared by Olivia Petryszak and is available upon request.
The video made for this composition was created by Anne Gentenaar based on mandalas, and was featured in an installation at the Toonzaal Concert Hall in Den Bosch during Erik Bosgraaf's artist residency.
