Tønsberg is the oldest city in Norway located on the western coast of the Oslofjorden, near its confluence with the Skagerrak Strait.
Harald Fairhair founded the city in the 9th century. It was also the ancient capital of Norway. Today the city of Tønsberg is the administrative center of the Vestfold region. It is also an important port and trading city.
During summer, Tønsberg becomes one of Norway's main tourist destinations. The city does not fall asleep even at night because of many restaurants and bars. Many of them are located on the waterfront "Brygga i Tønsberg" in wooden historical buildings that used to be boat houses.
We begin our walk by climbing Slottsfjell Hill. Here is the main symbol of the city of Tønsberg - the tower Slottsfjelltårnet, which was built in 1888, its height is 17 meters.
There was once a castle on the mountain, and in the 13th century, it was considered the largest and most fortified in Norway. After all, it was located on a natural mountain and was closed on one side by the sea. Unfortunately, in 1503 the castle was completely destroyed by the Swedes. But a miniature of this castle can be seen next to the tower.
Castle Hill is located in the center of Tønsberg and is the most popular place for outdoor recreation. From the top of the mountain, there is a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings.
We descend the hill and walk past the majestic Tønsberg Domkirke, built of brick in 1858 on the ruins of St. Lawrence Church from the first half of the 12th century.
The ship D/S Kysten is located on the city embankment. She was built as a coastal liner and operated on the Trondheim-Namsos route since 1909. D/S Kysten first arrived in Tonsberg in 1971. Since 2003, the boat has undergone a major overhaul. And since 2019, it has been taking tourists along the coast and the shores of the Skagerrak Strait.
The city fjord Byfjorden can be crossed via a drawable pedestrian bridge "Kaldnes bro". We were lucky, a yacht sailed under the bridge and we saw the bridge being opened and closed. Both sides of the City Fjord are suitable for a cozy walk, there are many benches, greenery, and flowers. As well as buildings in different architectural styles that you want to look at.
Also in the city of Tønsberg, there is a center for research and dissemination of information about the unique Viking heritage of Vestfold (Vikingodden). In the summer, the ship "Saga Oseberg" is launched - a full-scale archaeologically accurate copy of the ship. And nearby is a shipyard where skilled traditional boat builders work using Viking Age technology and tools.
Next, we pass by the large harbor of Ollebukta and turn into the city, where, after walking through the narrow but very cozy streets, we will look into the modern Library Tønsberg og Færder Bibliotek and the Haugar Kunstmuseum.
