Türkiye - a new military weapons exporting power | Military history |
In recent years, Türkiye has focused on developing the defense industry sector. In particular, promoting domestic weapons production is a prominent feature of the policy of the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Anadolu news agency said that Ankara's budget for defense projects was 5.5 billion USD in 2002, now up to 75 billion USD, including projects in the bidding process. It is not difficult to list some of the military equipment that has made a name for the country located on both Eurasian continents such as the Kaan fifth generation fighter, the Altay main battle tank, and the third-class aircraft carrier. light TCG Anadolu L400, long-range missile Khan, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Bayraktar TB2 or helicopter T-129 Atak.
Besides helping to improve the efficiency of self-sufficient supply of weapons, from only about 20% to 80% in the past two decades, the Turkish defense industry also makes the most of export opportunities. South China Morning Post said that after winning huge arms orders from the Middle East, Ankara sought to expand its market share, aiming to attract potential Asian countries. However, that road is not paved with roses. As an emerging player, the Turkish defense industry sometimes still struggles to win contracts from countries in Asia-Pacific. For example, Ankara lost the contract to supply 15 light combat aircraft to Malaysia earlier this year or the order to build 6 patrol boats with the Philippines. VTD - Military history
