Woodland scenics makes a road making kit that includes the smooth-it and the paving tape. Another thing I would recommend having done, is use some extra wood or some sheet styrene to make a barrier around the edge of the board.

As a citizen of the county that Britain forgot I actually think the plaster attempt was more accurate. Also to give the layout some life maybe a small building could be added like a hut or a signal box?

Well I guess the way people get things smooth with sanding is by first using a heavy grit sand paper and then going over it with a finer grit. The heavy grit removes a lot of the big imperfections, then the fine grit helps smooth out the small ones. It's tedious though which is why I don't sand stuff down often myself, and when I do, I just use one grit, which I then use paint to hide the "imperfections." And of course, how I get it looking smooth as I can, I mentioned my methods in your Horace vid. How that helps you somehow.

When I was building my layout, I didn't bother fussing about with model road resin mixture as it can get really messy. Painting on a road may not be very realistic but it hasn't let me down. I use Games Workshop paint as it dries quicker and doesn't leave too much brushstrokes. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter as it is your layout at the end of the day.
