All's well that ends well. Good job, good saw now, upgradable to a great saw with a good fence system, cast iron wings, and an even a bigger motor if one turned up for free or cheap. A 3 hp makes one of these babies honk through most any wood, but it is totally useable as is, you just gotta respect it's limitations and love it. Thanks for saving another sweet old boat anchor from the scrap yard and showing folks how it is easily done with a little perseverance. I got one of those crappy direct drive ones like you showed and I took it right back. I picked up my rusty renovator for a C note from a family member that needed the money more than the saw then put in like $150 more for parts and a lot of love. Now it is several years down the road I am still pleased that I saved one too, it is a noble project to save a well made tool. Do yourself a favor and take on one of these babies.

One of the saws was a “100” from ‘63 I use it right now..lol ! It kicks ass with a new arbor machined out of stressproof precision ground steel. It bad a$$ for the less than $200 I have in entire rig! Put a riving knife on it and inspect frequently. She’s like a classic car..Check oil!

I never have much luck with finding deals on Craigslist until this past Sunday. Found a newer model (1996) than this one you've rebuilt but the exact same saw. With both of its cast iron wings. $90 full working condition. Light rust on the cast iron, nothing like what you had to deal with. Someone changed the factory motor with a 1 hp but seems to work fine. I had the Skil table saw that you showed a picture of. Hated that saw but when I bought it I didn't know any better, it was in use for almost 3 years so live and learn and it paid for itself. Turned around the same day and sold that Skil table saw to a co-worker for $80. Wil be going thru the saw soon after watching your video.

I accidently found your series on this saw. I restored one almost identical to it a couple of years ago. Made several mistakes along the way and had to replace the arbor bearings which were very loose and caused blade wobble. That was not easy! The saw now works great even with the original 1HP motor. I have recently replaced the fence with a Delta T-square type of fence and it is a huge improvement. I never thought of painting the under side white. That is a very good idea since it is very dark under there normally. I will be looking for cast iron wings and need to replace the original switch.

Timely series as I'm currently tuning up my Mastercraft table saw. I replaced the fence with one designed by John Heisz kzitem.info/news/bejne/o2Z_rqKuoYWLppw and this made a huge difference. I also changed the blade from a 10 in to an 8 1/2 in (32 tooth) and the saw now cuts "like a hot knife through butter". A smaller blade may help with your power issues and an improved fence will help with alignment. The last cut you made seemed to be due to alignment and resulted in binding the saw blade. I would never have completed that cut as I was expecting kick-back. Thanks again for the terrific info pertaining to rebuilding the saw. Your son is adorable.

Love this series of vids! I have been working on more complicated projects that require a good table saw and my cheap Skil saw wasn't cutting it. I found a Craftsman 1977 model 113 for $75 and grabbed it immediately. No dings or dents. I bought it from a guy who bought it from the original owner 2 years ago and then never used it. It's been sitting in his garage collecting dust. It has the stamped wings and also the blade guard attachment. So far I have cleaned the top and bought a linked belt along with machined pulleys. I have plans to build a rolling cabinet around it with hinged extensions. Interesting to see what you discovered about your motor. Mine is almost certainly original and I am curious to see how it performs. Did anyone ever tell you you sound just like Les Stroud (Survivorman). Your voice and speech cadence are almost identical.

Just bought one of these at an auction in similar but more functional condition to this one when you picked it up. My motor is also a one horse, but it's got bushings instead of bearings. I believe it's a '77 or '78 model. Mine's underpowered with the one horse to be sure, but much better than this thing. Mine will rip through a 4x4 if you take it easy and it doesn't sweat a 2x4 on its side, which is much better than my direct drive saw it's replacing. Windings might be shot on that motor of yours. Definitely something wrong with it, but that one and a half horse is better anyway. I'm just trying to figure out why mine has tons of end play in the motor. Must be missing that spring washer or something. I took it apart and the bushings are in perfect condition with very little wear, there's just no provision I can see for thrust.

If someone is reluctant to buy a used table saw and rebuild it because the motor is suspect, or they don't feel confident tackling the motor repair as you did, there are always motor rebuild shops. They will sort out any issues with the motor, rebuild it like new and fully test it. A properly rebuilt motor is probably 98% as good as a new motor and the rebuild will cost you about half the cost of the new motor, or less.

Hello ... Not sure if you still get notifications for comments on this video, but I wanted to THANK YOU for these videos. I purchased an identical Craftsman Table Saw off of Craig's List (for $100) a few years back and, while I meant to try to restore it, as a relative novice it's ended up sitting in a corner collecting dust while I continued contemplating buying a new Delta at Lowes or something. NOW I am inspired to put the time in to see how mich work is needed on my Craftsman TS and get it up and running. I was wondering a couple of things . . . . Are you still using this table saw and, if so, are you still using the original fence system? I ask because I'm wondering if you ever upgraded the fence to a more robust style fence - such as a beismeyer style fence - and, if so, how did you mount such to the older Craftsman TS. Thank You Again !!! - TOM

Very good tutorial, I watched the complete teardown and rebuild from the start. I have this same model saw that was given to me by a friend, my saw has a 1/2hp motor on it obviously not the original motor. I found a very nice 1-1/2hp 13 amp 3450 rpm Craftsman motor and decided to replace the smaller one that's on the saw now with the bigger horsepower motor so that it would be more versatile. I am going to restore my saw this winter, and install new arbor bearings, a good cleaning, new paint job, along with upgrading to this bigger motor. I have read on the internet that Craftsman (Emerson) motors were rated at a much higher HP than they actually were, compared to other motor manufacturers. Do you know if this is correct or just a lot of gibberish internet talk? In other words, is this Craftsman 1-1/2hp a true 1-1/2hp motor, and will it allow me to build some nice cabinets, and decent furniture pieces for the house, or should I look for a different motor with around 2hp? Thanks for any help
@acme663ryo
9 жыл бұрын
Kenny Starr Try the 1 1/2hp. That should give you all the power you need. If you have 220v near by run your saw from that and you can get a little more from the motor. I am assuming the 1.5hp is a 110/220 motor but at that size I can't imagine it wouldn't be.
@mrgroovestring
9 жыл бұрын
NelsonStudios Will do, and thanks for the reply. Not sure yet if the 1.5 is 110/220 or just straight 110 I'm in the process of getting everything moved and set up within this next week. I can't imagine 1.5hp not being enough for me around the house. If I were running a production shop ripping a lot of thick oak stock or exotic hardwoods for extended periods of time, then I would surely go to something bigger. But, just for the average homeowner like me, I would think that a well adjusted saw with 1.5hp and a good sharp blade should make me happy for a long time. Thanks for the help.

Alot of those Craftsman and Harbor Freight motors are not really the Horsepower that they're rated to be, I used to have a Craftsman Direct Drive 2HP 110v Saw and somebody at Wood Magazine told me that it's really only about 3/4HP. Don't let Craftsman fool you they used to sell those so called 3HP Table Saws that were 110v, true 3HP Table Saw motors are 220v only and are found on Cabinet Saws like the Delta Unisaw for example. Have had my flex saw for yrs, made couple upgrades. Couple times a yr, pull flex cable off, and slide cable out halfway of outer casing. Pack it full of good white grease, then work it back n forth. Slide other half out until you see new grease, and repeat. As long as you stay with same shaft on drive motor, you can upgrade to larger hp and voltage if desired. Keep cable greased dry lube your angle and lift assemblies, make sure all hardware is tight an square, run quality blades. Look at Home Depot, and you'll find Delta fence and rails to upgrade that for $200.00, and wax on wax off table , and she'll take care of you for home shop work for yrs to come. I'm kinda stuck on the ole thing, have friends have the $$$$$ saws, and their great, But then I may have maybe $450.00 in mine, theirs in the $1,500.00 and beyond, and I really can't see the difference to justify that cost in my minds.

My tin wings sag down to both sides so one of these days they're going to the scrap metal yard with zero regrets.. The only reason I still have them has more to do with poverty than desire. Oh well.

Yea I hear you. You can run braces up at angle from the legs to hold them flat if you have the room. I have found that essentially any cast iron wing can be retrofitted to fit. No matter how many years the saw has sat out neglected the cast wings can be saved with some elbow grease so maybe you can find a dead saw and scavenge the carcass. Good luck!

NelsonStudios I'm thinking of a cast iron top model with the wings then just move the fence from my current saw. OR maybe my rich uncle will finally kick the bucket. Too bad I don't have any uncles still living.

No. At least not on that. I would rather have a firm grip and control.

A four year old and an unguarded pulley and belt is not a good combination.

+user990077 If you noticed he always had his son behind him whenever the saw was running. I think it is good to get young kids out in the shop, they may just learn a thing or two

so now you are blaming the issue on horse power dialed in with 1 horse should work for sraight cuts

I watched this in order to see how you might address the fence catching and not sliding smoothly, but alas the best solution you had was wax it and then save to buy a different fence. Very disappointing.

Craftsman's system leaves few options for remediation of an issue prevalent in the saw since new. All the ones I have worked on have been impossible to disassemble. A Ford will never be a Ferrari no matter how disappointed you are. If you want a fence that moves like butter it will have to be retrofitted.

NelsonStudios I purchased the Sears Align-a-rip fence to replace the stock fence.. $119 + shipping and it's just plain spiffy. It took me an hour or so to install and is miles and miles better than the old fence. I didn't have to drill a single new hole.

Nice. I will have to look that up. Shoot me a video of yours in action if you ever have a chance.

As soon as it's on photobucket I'll pass my ultra-super-messy shop along with the fence video. And before anyone decides I need a cleanliness lecture my mom beat you to it..So did the Mrs.. ;)

Hi Nelson, it would make me feel more welcome in this world [cultural tool world?] if you left out specifics like "young man" which is the anonymous person you keep talking about as the customer for your rebuilt saw. Young person might suffice because it sounds like you're excited to recirculate tools back into cycle through a "young blood" stream. "Young man" throws me off every time and has my whole life. This type of assumption kind of reinforces a standard/expectation that makes it a little more difficult to feel like I can be myself, like what I like, and do what I like to do (in any direction across any lines of gender norms. [I identify as non-binary.]) An accumulation of little difficulties turns into a mountain and I learned to slowly, with pain and hesitation, turn my back more and more and have to find and built my own communities. Which is work I am used to and have always just learned to do, but it would help if others tried to be more inclusive as well! I love your videos and I think you're an awesome person, which is why I feel invested and safe enough to share these feelings. I will be doing some upgrades to a Craftsman 113 I picked up for $100 and am really excited. Step 2 will be slowly getting used to a table saw in the home that isn't a SawStop.. Thanks Nelson

Awesome. On all of mine a sticky tilt was my biggest gripe. Sometimes you see them with the cranks broken off and vice grips clamped on.
