We have a painter at the local comic book shop (also the game shop). He’s a nice guy and always has a few extra minis or terrains and let’s the random kids who come in to the shop paint with him while he works on his own work too. I know he is a game master but I believe he runs his games more privately at either his house or one of his players’ places. He mostly just comes into the shop, from what I can tell, to work on painting the set and minis. It’s relaxing to sit around him and work on ones own work too if needed. No one but the kids interact back there but wherever he sets up is where other people working on stuff congregate because of this relaxed work vibe lol. Thought I would just share.

I was at a comic and pop culture expo this year, and I was a DM at one of the tables and I had a free one shot where anyone could join. The first group quit half way through. I sat there for maybe 3 hours and was sad, thinking I wasn’t a good DM. As I was starting to pack up a whole family showed up and some other people and asked if I was available. I was like “Ofc. We can get started now” I had everything prepared, including premade characters for anyone that didn’t want to or couldn’t make their own. We completed the whole one shot and everyone left the table thanking me for a great game and saying they had a lot of fun. That made the wait worth it and made my day. 😊

Meh. Most of my problems with DnD are shared by PF2E, and while it isn't for OGL reasons, Paizo isn't much less scummy than WotC/Hasbro, in my opinion. I hear first edition Pathfinder would be more up my alley, but I've got so many projects (both inside and out of TTRPGs) on the backburner that I haven't gotten around to checking it out yet, and frankly, if I do, I'd rather not give Paizo my money (if they happen to sell it still), so I intend to go all second-hand with it, when I do.

And the totally unprepared DM, who doesn't make or bring anything, who drew the map with whatever was around on the back of whatever paper they had around, uses whatever they have at hand for minis, and only has their rulebooks and dice as apps on their phone that they forgot to charge. Unfortunately, I think I am the "Lonely DM" type. I've always wanted to play DnD (and other games), and would buy the kits/books and miniatures, yet was never "cool enough" to join others. Now that I am disabled, well, thank Hades for video games. I still build terrain and kitbash for fun.
@Sin_Alder
Жыл бұрын
Same here, including the disabled part. I still collect and learn systems, mostly because I actually really like rule books and text books and such, but the only time I play I do solo, which just isn't the same. Especially since one of my personal favorites is PTU, which is kind of crunchy, and even just playing as a single player involves managing a minimum of two characters. In other words, managing any combat encounters means managing a large number of characters that have tons of math to keep track of, so the most simple of encounters when soloing against yourself takes an absurd amount of time. Video games definitely help fill the void, though.
@RoseKindred
Жыл бұрын
@@Sin_Alder PTU? Can you explain or spell that out so I can look into it. As for the rest, yes, video games help immensely. I credit Borderlands 2 for me still being here. What I hate is the condescending "Well you can just play DnD online." Well, yes, perhaps, but how do you explain the physical and mental drain to someone ablebodied? From the jokes and the memes about organizing game night, if it is so hard to get 6 people to play on one night now try adding in someone who may not be able to plan even their daily schedule due to constant changes. Just so aggravating.
