I've gotten questions on it fitting the Tacoma. On Amazon, it says it does not fit Tacomas. I HAVE AN ANSWER! You just need to replace the center tube. Swap the center tube with your stock plastic filter and you should be good to go.

Does the center tube just spin out? Or do I have push to the tabs on the side of it farther down? Doesn’t seem to be wanting to come out for me
@ICanDoItMyself

@erickream6378 tilt towards the tabs that are on the inside, doesn't matter which side. Push just a little more and it will pop out. Reverse that to re-install.

Great upgrade. Did mine (did a video in my channel) all Tacoma even the TRD Pro comes with the plastic. Some Toyota came with the metal housing like the early venzas, Sienna, Avalon and majority of Lexus come with the metal Housing.

There is nothing wrong with the plastic one. using the correct oil filter cap wrench and not over tightening it is most important. That said I do have the metal one on hand just in case but continue to use the plastic one. Using the motiveX cap wrench that fits the flutes one the filter cap will keep you from breaking the cap with ones that also grip on the fins that stick out.

Mine cracked getting it off after the dealership over torqued it. It's funny because the torque rating is printed right on the housing! I replaced with a plastic one from the dealership and continue to use it. But also have a metal one on hand. Someone else pointed out that the plastic acts like a fuse, falling before the more expensive in cost and labor upper portion. That sounds like a legit argument for plastic.

@@ICanDoItMyself I have the metal spare but won't use it because the soft NYLON COMPOSITE (Not plastic) version is gentle on the engine threads... I am buying a new nylon one for $28 shipped on ebay (genuine Toyota)... Imagine the cost if the engine threads are chewed up by the metal one... Shudder !
@ICanDoItMyself

@SunofYork others have said the plastic housing acts like a fuse. If you torque it properly, and the torque setting is on the housing, you shouldn't have any issues. The dealership over torqued mine, causing it to crack on next removal. To be honest, the metal one is still sitting on my shelf for emergency use if needed. The plastic replacement is still on my truck.

@@ICanDoItMyself We are in accord you and I. My metal one is the spare like yours. The soft Nylon composite one is on the car coz I am terrified of chewing up the engine threads with the sharp aluminum version... Can't imagine the cost of fixing the engine housing threads... Confirmed... both (genuine Toyota ) versions are about the same price on eBay. The aluminium one is prettier, but I made that mistake with women and the soft pliable ones are best !

I bought the same metal housing from Amazon. After buying it, I did some research on the Baxter oil filter adapter that allows you to use standard spin on filters. The spin on filters contain a anti drain back system which is also a plus. I will be going with the Baxter very soon.

The anti drain back valve is great for a top mounted filter. For a bottom mount filter it really doesnt make a difference as gravity keeps the filter full of oil anyways.

I would never put a metal filter housing to replace my plastic one, ever. Check out the car care nuts video on it. There is a critical component called a check valve in the housing that lets oil bypass when very cold and when filter is clogged. He also shows the flimsy quality. This is your oil filter housing folks, nothing but OEM that is made for your car.

@@ICanDoItMyself I just read that this is not a correct fitment on the Tacoma. I don't know what the difference is. Might have something to do with the filter standpipe height. @@chrisb6866 Use your own brain, not ALL parts cross references are CORRECT, I have 3 Toyota trucks, the only differences in two of them is the height of the center tube which can be easily switched out to the new aluminum housing! At 20,000 miles mine was cracked by the illegal aliens working at the Toyota dealership using an IMPACT wrench to put the filter on, which required TWO people and a breaker bar to remove it! So much for the Toyota "complimentary" oil change for a new vehicle! Do your OWN vehicle maintenance and THEN you will find that "things" are usually done correctly!
