Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League semi final at the Santiago Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti deployed tactical 4-4-2 diamond and Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern sat in a 4-4-2 defensive posture. Real Madrid dominated the first half, with Vinicius hitting the post and Neuer denying Rodrygo on the follow-up. Kane also came close, but Lunin tipped it wide. Neuer made more great saves to keep things level before Davies, on as a substitute, scored his first Champions League goal after a quick break. Madrid thought they'd equalised just moments later, but De Ligt's own goal was ruled out for a foul on Kimmich. It looked like that would be the goal to win it, but Madrid weren't to be written off, and another substitute, Joselu, turned things around. After Neuer spilled a tame Vinicius shot, the Spaniard poked it in from close range and tapped in a second, which was originally disallowed for offside, but VAR overturned it. Bayern had no answer, and Madrid will face Dortmund at Wembley at the start of June.
In this video we take a tactical look at Ancelotti’s attack tactics vs Thomas Tuchel’s counter attacking tactics and how Joselu came on and sealed the deal. We’ll also go into the VAR offside controversy against Bayern.
