I think the worst thing to happen to the sport was electronic scoring. Im saying this but its a catch 22. There was alot of complaints about incompetent scoring at the time (even cheating or intentionally not scoring points) back in the day. So the electronic scoring system solved a problem, but created another in taking away the incentive for raw aggression. You dont need to hit your opponent hard anymore, just tapping hard enough to register will do. Shock is not a thing anymore, the sport is "cleaner" I suppose, but the solution to end scoring controversy came at a (I believe) heavy cost. Mainstream Taekwondo competion has now moved even further away from realistic combat I think. To be honest, I think the goal of the WTF was always to be a better Olympic sport. Authenticity likely fell to the very bottom of priorities for the WTF's decision authorities somewhere in the early to mid 2010s.
@me...2381

This is half true and half false. Training regimen stays the same most of the techniques on the other hand changed to comply with this format but nonethless kicks are still fast and strong, what changed is the explosive and bombarded attacks. Tho sparring outside of competition still hurts and exhausting due to the lack of electronic counting(in my experience).
@USSSoyuz

@@USSSoyuz @craig gantt about not hitting hard anymore, there are still alot of practitioners that practice new school that packs quite the kick. Especially those who experience old and new school like myself. Yes, raw aggression is gone but (in some occassion) you can till see power and speed. Or maybe we are just in diff locations and experiences.
@USSSoyuz

@@me...2381 I'll have to respectfully disagree again, the front leg kicks are not designed for power, theres so little of the body that turns into them. They were always desigend to be checks, quick taps to either score or let your opponent know you're there and you see what they're doing. I've trained with the absolute best everytime Ive returned to TKD, the difference in objective and style must be obvious, even to the casual observer. TKD (at least the one I grew up with) is an action philosophy: "hit hard, hit fast, be accurate". Can you honestly say that is what you're seeing in this video?
@me...2381
3 жыл бұрын
@@USSSoyuz i agree with what you are saying with front leeg kicks. I too only use them to check, push, or dissorient opponnets still you would use back leg for counter after using front leg kicks. I dont know from what i see and experience. 1 flexibility to aim for those electronic spots (now these dont have much power but rather great point taker) 2 even so we are still thought of using front leg as point getter while using back leg as counter. just additional info i grew up in old school styleof TKD, stoped a few years come back in the new style of TKD even so the coach still mostly teach students how to be smart in pointing but still gives power. Yes, raw agression is not abundant anymore but tactical pointing and more ways to land a head or turning is rising. But front leg is not to be mess with either since they can knock you out especially S-kicks and front leg axe. They dont have the turning ability of other kicks but still great point getter and sure to give your enemy "run for their money"-figure of speech. I too miss old school TKD but this new school aint weak either, Just different. Plus there are a lot of coaches out there who teach old school TKD with a few lessons on pointing in new school.

I am not sure that 1999 would be considered "old school" :-) this was after TKD stopped using punches to the head and only sporadically scored for punches to the body, so we can see that both of these fighters have their hands mostly hanging at their sides. "Old School as in 1970s and earlier looked a lot more like Karate matches. Punches to the head were legal as well as punches to the body. The hands more in a defensive position in those days.

Back in my taekwondo days are used to be very good with combat and respect and self-depend which some still do but they care about more winning trophies, and going to the Olympics, winning more plastic medals this seems that some taekwondo styles and some instructors out there I have seen they care about putting more money in their own pockets, then caring about what taekwondo was supposed to I still think taekwondo is the best martial arts out there I think some taekwondo instructors need to rethink what taekwondo is post to represent, and not about winning trophies and medals because that does not make a martial artist is the person behind the belt that makes the difference.

I don’t understand why it’s so nerfed. I do taekwondo by the way and it’s fine for sparring but in a fight you should fight I don’t understand martial arts and their weakness when it comes to competition. It’s almost an insult to call it a fight. I box as well and that is actually a fight. Martial arts needs to quit with the rules for little kids and let us adults mix it up and actually fight. Get rid of the body protectors at least headgear is fine to protect you from cuts and bruising but get rid of that stupid goofy protector. Body protector should only be used for kids and when you are sparring.
