Tai Lung is my personal favorite Dreamworks villain. He has an intimidating presence, and incredible capabilities. His backstory is so genuine, especially because his turn to the dark is partly Shifu’s fault. He has so much physical abilities, yet doesn’t truly believe In himself. He thinks he needs this one thing, when he doesn’t. Such a deep villain.

I'm genuinely taken aback at how thorough and thoughtful this analysis is. The way you highlight the repeated themes of Tai Lung looking at Shifu really brings out the emphasis on how he was raised that this movie has. Tai Lung's constant search for validation due to the idea that he needed to be good at Kung Fu isn't shown better anywhere than in the way he looks at Shifu whenever something happens.

There's another aspect you glossed over a bit that really drives your overall point home: Abandonment. Remember, Shifu wasn't just Tai Lung's master, he was his adoptive father. Tai Lung was ABANDONED by his parents so he was already dealing with severe abandonment issues that you would expect from someone who was left behind by their parents. Even Po deals with this to an extent in KFP 2 & 3. So you take Tai Lung, someone with deep abandonment issues, and effectively abandon him at what should've been his moment of triumph, that's an emotional blow that could drive anyone crazy. I hope that if Tai Lung returns for KFP4, Po is able to help him find peace, because I truly believe that this wasn't entirely his fault.

Dabi/Touya from My hero academia is very similar. Both are tragic characters who became evil because of how they were raised by their parents, specifically Shifu and Endeavour. Endeavour would be even worse because he was obsessed with surpassing All Might and he decided to create a perfect child who could best him. Touya was his first and eldest son who was born with flames that even stronger than Endeavour's. But he didn't have resistance to heat and his body was weak so every time he used his quirk he ended up hurting himself. He was raised with the Idea of surpassing All Might, he kept training despite the drawbacks of his quirk, through pain and suffering. But when Shoto the youngest son, "perfect child" was born Touya was abandoned and thrown away by his father Endeavour. He still kept training in secret because he wanted his father's attention, and he ended up burning himself to an absolute crisp. But he didn't die. Years later he returned back as Dabi to haunt his father, exact his revenge and prove he was the best, he was better than Shoto, that he is worthy

This is the problem when one of your teachers is very hands off, and letting things happen as they will, while another teacher is all about obedience to your master. Oogway watched Shifu turn Tai Lung into a monster, then on the cusp of getting what he thought he deserved, Oogway said no. Shifu said nothing, because going against your master is against his beliefs. Tai Lung just broke after that, because there was no where else to go from there. What do you do when you train your entire life for something, only to have your master deny it to you? Just keep training for another 15+ years, and hope the answer is different? Actually no. He would have trained for another 20 years, to watch Oogway make Po the Dragon Warrior.

I totally agree with everything you said and I'd like to add a few things. Shifu kind of reminds of old fashioned parents in real life that believe that if a child has education, clothing and food etc then they have completed their job. A lot of parents dont realise that children need emotional support and unfortunately a lot of parents dont have emotional intelligence. As a lot of Asians dont even believe depression is a thing. While I sympathise completely with Tai Lung there is no denying he is doing evil and if this werent a kids movie i think we can imagine Tai lung could easily and willingly kill people. Those people are innocent right? Tĥey dont know the drama in his life and they also deserve to be happy. Someone that thinks that stealing happiness will give him happiness like someone who steals a gold brick and see it turn to sand before his eyes, it doesnt work. Shifu gave me a bad lesson inadvertently. A lot of real life criminals also have tragic lives but then they destroy other lives. Do the other lives not matter? Of course they do. And this is what sets him apart from Po. Po was raised by a loving father who instilled in him goodness. So Po naturally uses his powers for good and he's /talented/ in that. Its a good thing Po only met Shifu after having his own personality formed completely.

I keep thinking that Shifu genuinely loved Tai Lung as a son, but like many parents it was a selfish love. He wanted Tai Lung to be the Dragon Warrior because he wanted to be The Guy Who Raised the Dragon Warrior. And you know what? He never REALLY has to confront his mistakes. He has the fight with Tai Lung, but that's a fight he chose to have. He locks Tai Lung in a torture chamber for 20 years - an entire lifetime at that point. Honestly, execution would be more merciful, especially if his "rampage" is meant to imply that people got hurt or killed. Instead, Shifu never had to let go, and simply left him in a hole where he never had to think about him. Then, Tai Lung comes back, and though Shifu is pushed to the point of almost apologizing, Po comes along and kills Tai Lung, freeing Shifu from actually creating a moment of closure and accountability. He says he's "found peace," but really, I think all he's found is an escape from his own responsibility. This isn't to say Tai Lung did nothing wrong, clearly he never learned how to deal his emotions in any way other than lashing out at others, and it's possible his rampage through the valley went beyond smashing some walls and knocking over some torches. But think about how he conducts himself on the way to the palace. He's brutal against the prison guards, but only because they were actively trying to kill him after ruthlessly abusing him for half his life. Because it's a kids movie, we never even find out if any guards die, they just bounce around and scream. When he confronts the Five, they're immediately trying to kill him, and think they succeeded, but he doesn't go the same way. He paralyzes them for what can't be more than a couple hours, and leaves Crane more mobile so they can all return to the palace. Yes, he wanted to send a message of how powerful he is, but he only needed 1 of them to return in order to do that. He's not a man who likes killing, and he doesn't prolong suffering, but he DOES enjoy that rush of being physically better than an opponent. Even against Po, the only indication that he MIGHT be trying to kill him is that he snaps when the scroll is just a mirror and he's being told "you didn't fail at being the Dragon Warrior, you just weren't good enough." It's not like he's an intensely good person who's ONLY treated unfairly by the plot, but he's understandable. I've been through situations where I've worked for something my entire life, been told that my only worth is in achieving it, and then found out that - even though it's nobody's fault - it just wasn't meant to be. That's something that empties you out, makes you feel so worthless. And when people around you who you're supposed to trust won't tell you what you need to hear, that emptiness fills with anger and pain and a desire to just do SOMETHING to be noticed. This is that experience on a fantastical magnitude. It makes me wonder, if he'd had a life outside of the palace, if he had 1 other person who he could rely on to reassure him that he's not a failure and he's still accomplished so much, would he have made the choices he made? Would he have lashed out and destroyed as much as he did? It's too late to know. He gave into the darkness, he made his choice. And once everyone saw him as a monster, he too readily accepted that he should just be one. Darkness doesn't exist without light though. He simply had walls built around him that cast shadows. It's the kind of story that makes you wish there were another way.

I'm gonna be honest. Kung Fu Panda was one movie that made me cry so hard. Because I can relate to so many things. There are so many things this movie can teach you. Kung Fu Panda teaches you to not force things but to be patient as you go along your journey. And most important of all, is that you need to work hard but not expect reward from that hard work. Just understand that part of life's purpose is hard work. That's it. My favorite movie of ALL TIME. Master Oogway could’ve guided him to the inner peace he sought after while in the spirit world. Master Oogway could’ve done this since I believe he has a bit of blame to share on how Tai Lung turned out too. If he saw darkness within him, he could’ve easily guided him towards the right path like he lead Po out of self doubt & into self belief. Instead Oogway lets the darkness brew within until it completely engulfs Tai Lung driving him down his angry path but now that’s possibly changed. Master Shifu, his father, saw greatness within Tai Lung & he’s achieved that greatness. Tai Lung is Shifu’s greatest student, probably the greatest Kung Fu warrior, he’s just not the Dragon Warrior & I think he can handle & accept that! Can’t wait to see him, hopefully he isn’t just a cameo appearance.

I think a level of accountability has to be put on Tai Lung here. While he may have felt betrayed bu Shifuu that does not he was justified. He made the ultimate choice to attack the village to lash out at everyone who didn't wrong him. The Darkness Uugway saw in him was there built up by Shifuu as a underlying ego. Tai Lung wasn't just trained to fight by Shifuu but probably to be a good person.

You know, even when I watched this movie as a child, even my young mind knew Tai Lung was completely overreacting. I just sat there thinking, "Dude, you gotta get over yourself." I'm sorry, but he was properly understood. We need to dispel a myth here. I'm sorry, but you are dead wrong when you say that Tai Lung's dream of being Dragon Warrior was all Shifu's idea. It was Tai Lung's own idea. Tigress outright tells us this. Tai Lung wanted to be a martial artist on his own. Shifu simply encouraged him that he was destined for great things. And to dispel another myth here, Shifu undeniably loved Tai Lung. He was always proud of him. And about your point on how he treated the Five and Po, it's outright stated he turned cold to his students because of Tai Lung's turn to evil. He was afraid of making the same mistakes again. He outright admits that his mistake was loving Tai Lung TOO much, to the point where he overlooked Tai Lung's darker tendencies. And also, where are you getting that he only showed Tai Lung affection when he did well at Kung Fu? I saw no such thing. But Shifu didn't betray Tai Lung. Even as a child, I was questioning just what Tai Lung expected Shifu to even do about Oogway's decision. Just nag him until he changed his mind? As Shifu points out, it wasn't up to him in the first place. The truth is Tai Lung became entitled. He reached the point where he believed he was owed the Dragon Scroll. His true enemy, the thing he never saw, has his own hubris. I'm pretty sure Oogway told him and Shifu why he was rejected, but it is obvious that Tai Lung was too blinded by his own ego to listen. The truth is Tai Lung could have still been a great warrior like one of the the Five, and still would have earned Shifu's approval anyway even without the Dragon Scroll. And Oogway and Shifu absolutely could have shown him the way, too. It's just he was too busy destroying villages and attacking them to care enough to listen. All he had to do was let go of the Dragon Scroll, find something else, and he would have been perfectly fine. But he CHOSE to be come a monster. And even if he only wanted his master's approval, all I've got to say is that would be hard to do if you murder said master first, dude. Tai Lung is still responsible for his own actions, and I'm sorry, but he suffered the way you claim he did only in his head.

Shifu definitely failed Tai Lung both as a Mastet & father but I do believe that Oogway has a bit of blame to share on how Tai Lung turned out too. If he saw darkness within him, he could’ve easily lead him towards the light like he lead Po out of self doubt & into self belief. Instead Oogway lets the darkness brew within until it completely engulfs Tai Lung driving him down his angry path.

The weight of expectations, especially from someone who you want to please, is just unbearable! I’d say Oogway has a part to play in who Tai Lung becomes just as much as Shifu. He saw how much Tai Lung devoted himself to his training. While Shifu’s intentions were innocent Oogway should’ve addressed him about his methods, & the path he was leading his student! In the end what Tai Lung doesn’t realize is that he has already achieved the GREATNESS his master had envisioned in him. Despite Po being the Dragon Warrior & the Furious 5 being masters themselves doesn’t change the fact that Tai Lung is still Shifu’s GREATEST student!! I hope he’s in Kung Fu Panda 4 & Shifu acknowledges him as that!!

After Kung fu panda 3, I'd say both Po and Tai lung are shifu's GREATEST students. It's just sad that only Po was able to tap into his true potential. I feel like if shifu raised Tai lung right, Both he and Po would have been great companions if not outright friends. Also, Tai lung's experience with being left by his biological parents would have been of great help to Po in the 2nd film as to help them bond. I hope kfp 4 can give us something like what I mentioned.

@@alphonsejohnson5601 Nah, Po is the Dragon Warrior & fulfilled his duty but I don’t think he’s Shifu’s best student. Tai Lung spent years mastering a 1000 different forms of Kung Fu, defeated Master Shifu, & the Furious Five which are all masters too. The origins are very similar which would help them bond as friends, heck they even share the same master. Tai Lung’s redemption I believe requires more than one movie imo!

This analysis is why I like Tai Lung the most out of the three main baddies in this series. He's tragic, complicated, sympathetic, and in my opinion: a true character worthy of Shakespeare. He kinda reminds me of Rameses from the Prince of Egypt. Just like how Tai Lung had it engraved in his mind that he was to become the Dragon Warrior. Rameses had it hammered in his mind that if he didn't honor the ancient traditions and keep the dynasty alive. He'd become the weak link to bring it down, which he ultimately does.

Honestly the biggest mistake Shifu made was neither training him hard or training him to find his opponent's weakness to exploit it, because at the end of the day to be a great warrior and master of Kung Fu you have to be hardened to some extent, but his biggest mistake is putting this expectation of becoming the Dragon Warrior, of not teaching him the mindset and self control that comes with being as strong of a warrior and fighter as Tai Lung is. His aggression is not the problem, but his lack of self control and his fragile ego and constant need for validation. Ultimately Tai Lung wanted the fruits of all his life of blood, sweat and tears. When he was denied the title it lead to him becoming pissed as essentially all his life he has worked for nothing. And at the end he really wanted to see what that scroll was, for what he worked all his life, and I bet it being empty and Po's words probably lead to hin changing in the spirit realm. Shifu' biggest mistake wasn't the training in itself but his kind of lack of education on Tai Lung in regards to him being able to find peace and have a strong sense of self and control himself. And most importantly, ease off the pressure off him and him being reassured that no matter if he becomes the dragon warrior or not, he has still grown and become a great master of kung fu. He probably would've turned out much more differently if Shifu took that approach.

It's interesting how Tai Lung compares to Tigress, who is almost a 'replacement kitty' for Tai Lung and replicates similar dark qualities early on, but has at least some of the self restraint to not turn evil. What might help is that Shifu gave her low expectations, she was constantly told she wasn't good enough in direct fear she would end up like Tai Lung, but at the same time, she knew about his story, she knew WHY she was getting this treatment. That may be why she was still hopeful she'd be Dragon Warrior, even if there's clearer sense of desperation about her than Tai Lung, she's not ASSURED she'll get it. Also Tigress, unlike Tai Lung seemingly, had many peers throughout her training. In place of Shifu's approval she at least had several friends being supportive to her, even if she clearly sought her father figure's approval more than they did. They even relate to her disappointment not getting the Dragon Scroll, even if they manage to hold their anger towards Po a lot better. One other small detail however, is that Shifu DEFENDED Tigress after Po was chosen instead. Choosing a big fat panda seemed to be the limit for Shifu in his patience with Oogway, and with that Tigress knew Shifu actually has her back. There was no 'betrayal', even with her desperately wanting the Dragon Scroll, and thus she turned her contempt to that blasted panda who stole it from her rather than Shifu. Even Oogway himself is shown not nearly to be as hands off with Tigress throughout her training in flashback material, he doesn't let her go 'into a path to darkness' and leave it a simple no afterwards. He tells her straight up she has merit being herself in her earlier years. You could argue that since Tigress was adopted afterwards, the two maybe learned from their mistakes, but it does still feel like Tai Lung got a much more unfair hand than even Tigress, despite her own hardships. Unlike her, Tai Lung felt not just betrayed, but ALONE. If Shifu didn't support him, who ELSE would?
@divad7137
7 ай бұрын
@@e-122psi3 That is so well said, Tigress had lower expectations put on her and had her peers as well as master Shifu. In a way you can also say she is like the other extreme, as she was discouraged and trained more rigidly but she still turned out fine, she still could've turned out like him, as she was given the expectation that she was not worthy enough all the time and she could've again broken in fury like Tai Lung if not for the factors you mentioned. Tai Lung only had Shifu to look for approval and this dream of Dragon Warrior put on him by Shifu, with no other alternative pathway, just like a linear path for this single goal for years, so basically when he got rejected this title and because he did not learn to have healthy self esteem and self worth, all his self worth got put on the title of Dragon Warrior, and when all this was denied from him, he felt betrayed and alone. Hope he changes for the better in the next movie.
@e-122psi3
7 ай бұрын
@@divad7137 You could argue that Tai Lung himself was the victim of Tigress' own lashing out. That by defeating him she thought she would prove herself and in their battle she is the angry volatile one while Tai Lung is calm and presses her buttons such as losing to the panda. Tai Lung was ironically Tigress' Dragon Scroll in that battle. Again though, the differences are shown in how Tigress' actions, while self serving, have at least some well intention and restraint, she still wants to please Shifu, not turn on him, and how her teammates have her back and are trying to prevent her getting herself killed. She even suffers the same stun technique as Tai Lung did against Oogway, just Crane is able to get her to safety afterwards. Tai Lung supposedly never had this support, he was left to stew in jail alone. The fourth movie, supposing Tai Lung gets a lot of limelight, could be interesting potential for the character, especially since in all likeliness he will spend more time with Po and Zhen rather than Shifu, as in potentially gain peers and support akin to what Tigress had.

The revelation of the dragon scroll was so brilliantly written imo. It was nothing, yet it revealed something so key, it revealed why oogway rejected tai lung as the dragon warrior. Imagine if he was chosen the dragon warrior and looked at it. He would give the same angry and frustrated reaction. Personally I don't even think that "secret ingredient" analogy was the correct answer to the blank scroll. I think it was just something fitting that po felt convenient and inspiring with. Shifu trained him to be the strongest, but it's very clear he never really trained him in patience or compassion. That being said I blame Oogway for not stepping in MUCH earlier to help guide him down the right path. So his master failed him by filling his head with ideas of strength and glory whilst training him to the peak of his ability, and Oogway failed him waiting until the last possible second before denying him his ultimate goal. He was clearly never taught any real spiritual practices aside from what he could use in combat once again this being Shifu's fault by hammering it into the guy from the time he could stand or speak.

Tai lung should still be held accountable for his own actions. He took his anger out on everyone around him and became a murderer. All for a scroll that wasn't even his to have. He wasn't misunderstood, he was violent, powerful, extreme, and didn't care who he had to hurt to get a scroll that wasn't his. I know Shifu messed up with raising, giving him that expectation in the first place. But I think we can all agree that Two Lung's actions are not justified even in the slightest because of that. Shifu never stopped loving Tai. That love was unconditional, dragon warrior or not. But that didn't matter to Tai Lung. All that mattered was the scroll. Btw I mean no disrespect.
