Great video! Helicopter aerodynamics always fascinate me.

Thanks, you seem like a very intelligent fixed wing engineer. Maybe we should do a collaboration!!

My God, the amount of wear and tear on those bearing surfaces from all the constant angle changes is incredible considering how fast that tail rotor spins and all the while flapping and changing pitch with each rotation. How often does an entire tail rotor assembly need to be torn down and overhauled completely?

Great video, nice to see how that delta hinge changes the blade angle. Do tail rotors generally run at the same tip speed as the main rotor ?
@truckerray7533

Most all helicopters will have a 5:1 to 5:1 1/2 gear ratio between the main rotor & the tail rotor. The tail rotor will spin 5 to 5 1 1/2 revolutions per one revolution of the main rotor!

TRUCKER RAY thanks, I was asking about tip speed rather than rotor rpm, the tip speed is a result of rotor rpm and rotor diameter and I find hard to establish the most efficient tip speed in which to run at. Calculations probably beyond my level.

@@Ben-Dixey Not stalking, but no, the tail rotor does not necessarily spin the same tip speed as the main rotor. Did a lot of calculations on this a while ago. With main rotors being most commonly around 200-220m/s tail rotors seem to be from 160 to 240 m/s. On average the tail rotors tend to be around 10% slower tip speed. Depends a lot on number of rotors, power and anti torque required, surface area drag from cross wind, diameter clearance etc. Basically there is no fixed correlation between main tip speed and tail tip speed.
