I used to hike elephant mountain when I was little because my home was 15 minutes walking distance away, I believe .. I actually had a red eared slider turtle released in the pond of elephant mountain's temple, a few decades ago by my dad. That turtle was my childhood pet and the link of my childhood to taiwan. I suppose one day when I retire from the states, that I would move back to my old home. Should the pond still be there, I will pay my old friend a visit. 😊

To clarify, ROC went to Taiwan post WW2. Prior to that, parts of Taiwan had been ruled by the Spanish, Dutch, Ching empire (China) and Japanese. So In a way, you could say that there are a couple of different national identities exist for the people of Taiwan today: ROC, Taiwan and ROC Taiwan. This identity crisis is due to the fact that 1.Taiwan is a young democratic country and 2. People in Taiwan only started to form some sort of collective identity as Taiwanese under the Japanese rule, which is pretty recent. Hope this makes sense.
@bctvanw

Ironically, Dr. SYS did not treat Taiwan as part of ROC before he died. Dr SYS did visit Taiwan a few times to find supports from Japanese and Taiwanese for his revolution. The memorial hall was built when Taiwan was still under KMT’s dictatorship.

Wow. As high of a view as Freedom Tower in NY! I don't mind seeing Taipei 101 gives a "hometown discount" for locals. The Hancock Tower in Chicago feels a lot like that. Not as fast at Freedom Tower. What a spooky cool feel to the view with those clouds! LA and SF skyscrapers should use that big ball, too. Wow. 12 years and the baseball stadium's not done? We'll have to get there someday for a game. Cute elephant art! Nice. From the overhead, it DEFINITELY looks like an elephant-shaped hill. Nice surprise temple! And not-surprise temple! And love the story of Songshan's rebuilding. Those mushrooms look outstanding. BBQ'd chili shrooms! Nice. Pineapple buns! Had them here in Philly's awesome Chinatown. Probably nowhere near as good as yours with the disgustingly awesome butter. That ice cream roll! Hmmmm....that is the Chicago "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" of desserts. The ice cream & brittle is like the Peter Cetera-sung ballad, with the cilantro becoming the crazy up-tempo horn section blast. I love the song. Not sure about the dessert.

The ice cream roll thing comes from a very traditional Taiwanese food called lumpia. It normally has peanut powder, a lot of veggies, maybe some meat and tofu, served cold. @IfWeGoTo it's usually a run or walk accessible to public transport either around Taipei or beyond, we did a recent one in Houtong the Cat Village. You get to see the most beautiful places you would never see otherwise. Many of the places like Zhuzihu, Yangminshan, Tamsui, etc.. are all areas we've run in. Was surprised to see so many places I know

0:19 Look at Brandi and Randi smile! They look like they just ate a block of cheddar! I can't believe they are forcing you folks to mask the pieholes. Sad.

Hahaha thank you! I think they did have a mandate still going at the time, but honestly the masks really don't bother us. We continue to wear them by choice if the majority of people in a space were. If it makes people more comfortable, we don't mind. Masks were a thing in Asia long before covid even started!

We appreciate you pointing it out, we did get it right in later videos as we learned. But so you know what goes into it - these videos are a TON of work to make and require so much learning as-is. We’re continually learning as we go, but we’re going to make mistakes. Pronunciations in foreign languages are especially hard because there aren’t always good resources available. And while comments like yours help us learn, the tone could’ve been nicer.

For new travelers to Taiwan be prepared for people who are very aggressive in their use of public space... pedestrians have no rights and that includes the bicyclists on the sidewalks of Taipei who are reckless. Expressions like "excuse me" are unknown in Taiwan where people will happily step on your feet or bump into you in their rush to get somewhere before you get there. After awhile it will become extremely annoying.

Hahaha, it was definitely a bit chaotic, but compared to India (where we were a week prior to visiting Taiwan) it was quite organized and peaceful!! hahaha.
