His name is Waqas Gulab. He is based out of Karachi. We are trying to get him set up to record. I'm sure he would love to add tabla to your or anyone's tracks for a small price. I think what he needs now is a mic. I bet if someone provides the mic he will provide the tabla :)

That is one of the smoothest horns I have heard in so long, absolute smackaroo. Give my man Arsalan on the guitar something more to do, though, I'd lose my mind doing that one bar phrase over and over and over again, and we didn't even get to hear him solo :,(

The guitarist was doing the Dave Brubeck piano 5/4 rift from the original recording. He did the same phrase over and over too.

He couldn’t do anything else. If he had, the bottom would have dropped out of the entire song. Someone had to keep the groove and structure together. Now, if there was a bass (or similar), he then could’ve soloed. Would’ve been nice to hear, especially if the guitar and sax could’ve set up a dialogue. For what it’s worth.

It does blend well! some of the bends "Gamaka" etc don't work without modifying the horn but you can do some cool stuff :)

@@amj.composer I have not modified the horn. I think of what I am doing as playing jazz. If you want to hear real Indian music on the saxophone you need to check out Kadri Gopalnath. He played Karnatik...He modified his horn.

A friend sent me a video of a guy exhibiting various world percussion instruments. This reminded me of my favorite tablas player, Waqas Gulab. That then reminded me of this groovy little tune. I'm glad I found it again. I hope everyone in this video is having the best day today

for me, odd time is best practiced by taking a rhythm in your chosen "odd meter" and playing it every way you can think to do. then do a similar rhythm and repeat. The tabla player learns "bols." I dont know what the guitar player did for this...i suspect he just sat with a metronome for a long time :) Thank you for your comment.

Attempted a rendition of Take 5 on a 10th hand Alto at a house party in Jhb one year, oh, how I wish it sounded like this...it didn't, and I nearly ended up in my own pool sans Sax. Superb recording.

I am aware of Sachal! When I was in Karachi awhile back all 3 of us performed Take Five with Nafees Ahmad. Ustad Nafees was the sitar player in the Sachal recording. Our performance at NAPA preceded this recording or the Sachal recording was released but the Sachal recording had been made. Thank you for making this connection!
