After watching the movie Nyad in February 2024, I asked myself, "How long can I swim without getting out of the water?"
Then I asked, "How far is that?"
Thus began my journey to develop stamina.
During the four weeks on Maui, I walked to the public outdoor pool every day and tested myself. I had to take a break to visit the loo. If I had eaten anything, sometimes I'd feel and smell the food coming up (acid reflux).
I decided, I had to swim on an empty stomach to avoid breaks.
I started at 30 minutes and clocked it up to 3 hours with no break. This gave me a lot of confidence. I became very focussed. To my surprise, I didn't eat more but I lost my food cravings and lost a little bit of weight.
In late May, I signed up for my first fundraiser: Swim 15 Miles in June for the American Red Cross. I knew 15 miles was not a problem but I had no idea where I could swim in and around Boston, Massachusetts. I met my fundraising goal within a few days and well before I knew where I could swim.
I wasted a lot of time looking for places to swim. The public (outdoor) swimming pools were largely closed until school was out. I couldn't swim in public indoor pools when there was thunder. I swam more than 18 miles by the end of the third week, largely devoting the last few days exclusively to swim.
I just started my second fundraiser -- Swim 5 Miles in September for the American Cancer Society.
Thanks to the 14 donors, I raised more than $500 in the first week. I've now doubled the goal to $1,000 in hopes of reaching more people with the message of stopping cancer with this fundraiser.
