The thing is, 5-10 minutes is still short for modern KZitem standards. For lack of a better term, this channel feels "old school". It's not 60 second TikToks or Shorts, or 40 minute explainers. As long as your videos are shorter than 10 minutes, I think most of us will be happy. And you two have become so concise over the years that even without a rule, I think most of your videos will end up being about 5 minutes long.

As someone who is new to the channel, I definitely would not want to see the 4 minute rule reinstated (I just learned about the rule yesterday). Problem: when noting that a vlogbrothers video is over four minutes, my mental expectation is of something extraordinary, be it for good or ill. A four minute post gives me the feeling that the world is operating correctly for a moment, even if viewing it leaves me convinced otherwise. It packs more significance to me than the terrorist threat level or the air quality index. Worse, if they change it, I will have to make a personal, internal adjustment and I'm getting kinda old for that.

John, I think it’s really important to remember that when you and Hank started making videos, the “speed up” feature… didn’t exist. At this point, you can feel free to make a 15 minute video if you want. If I feel like you’re rambling, I’ll just speed you up, it’s what I do to everybody else 😂 Plus, there’s literally millions of us in the community, you can lean on us and count on us not to leave. We can handle your weight friend. ❤
@Jackallleo

I agree in principle but speeding up is bad here! It shows that the video isn’t worthy of the time they’ve put into it and I think there should at least be a 10-minute rule to limit this kind of thing - being relatively concise is important and an integral part of their format. Basically as a devotee of this community I never want to condense my time here!
@tomisaacson2762
Жыл бұрын
@@JackallleoI agree, but only because I don't come to vlogbrothers videos strictly for the informational content. That's just one part of the appeal. I watch at 1x for the vibes. Plus their content is thoughtful and leaves me with stuff to contemplate. I see speeding up videos as analogous to referencing, skimming, or just enjoying a book as opposed to closely reading every line. It's not about not valuing the time put into the work, but adjusting my use of the work according to what I'm using it for. I've never read a textbook cover to cover, for example, but I use and value them a lot. A lecture with mostly familiar material I'll watch at >2x. An infotainment video with some unfamiliar content will be anywhere from 1-2x depending on the ratio of new info to entertainment (and of course the speed and style of the speaker). Comedy, music, art, most movies, etc. are at 1x.

I’ve never actually felt the need to speed up one of Hank or John’s videos. My statement was meant as reassurance that they can make videos as lengthy as they want, I’ll still watch them. Even with the 4-minute rule suspended, I think it is clear that the content and quality of your videos are not compromised. I love the 4-minute rule because I never feel as though I can't fit a video into my schedule with it. However, your writing has undoubtedly improved due to years of the 4-minute rule, so that even with it suspended, a majority of videos have still been under 6 minutes (a very consumable amount of time). I like the idea of a time cap, but I think increasing that cap permanently to 5-6 minutes or so is well worth it. Keeps a challenge, takes it down a notch, but we still receive quality content because you've practiced giving it to us in such a concise way for years. Once you started regularly going over 4 minutes a while back it sort of dawned on me that the 4 minute limit is part of the reason I've gone for over ten years without missing a single video. It really is a perfect length, there is always time for it, and it still feels substantial enough to be enjoyable and thoughtful. Since the videos started going over I've had more than a few times where I've gone "okay, this is long, I'll watch this later" and then felt like I had to go back and watch it much later. I'm gonna vote to keep the 4 minute. But ultimately you guys do what makes you feel best. If that is taking it down a notch and have longer videos I won't complain :) (also, might I suggest a compromise? 4 minutes but you get a certain amount of longer non-educational videos a year or something?) edit: LONGER videos, not shorter 😅

I agree, I like the reliability of the four minute requirement (Guaranteed content I can watch when I'm killing a little pocket of time before work, yay!) but longer stuff can be fun too. You're a creator, and you should be free to flex your creative chops whenever and however you want. That being said, the 4 minute rule probably does force you to think differently about things. As a KZitem writer myself, I know how extremely difficult Shorts are to write. With only about 250 words to use, you need to make each one count, and you can't linger on an idea just for better comprehension. It's pushed my writing skills hard, and has made my other writings better. You've always had exceptions to the 4 minute rule, and I think those are fine, but the 4 minute rule will push you to write better on the regular. That being said, I know you are crazy busy right now, and writing shorter stuff is often harder than writing medium length stuff, so I get the desire to drop it. Also, I'm gonna watch no matter how long the videos are. This was all just my 2 cents.

My year had the notches cranked up unexpectedly too (in a less frightening way). On February 24 my husband and I were pre-approved for a mortgage (very exciting, intimidating, and privileged experience). Two weekends of viewings and two offers later we closed on a house March 31st. We moved in on May 16th. At the end of June I had to take a class to maintain my status in my graduate program (I'd been taking a sabbatical for health and house hunting). 6 months ago I didn't even think we could buy a house! My job has been understaffed all year too, but that didn't stop new projects from popping up! It feels like someone put my life in turbo mode. I'd like to slow down and smell the rose bush in my yard (that was a lovely surprise). The class is over this weekend and I can take 4 more months off and finally unpack more than the essentials. I know I can't control it, but I really am looking forward to autumn and having a cup of tea on my porch and if even for a moment, taking it down a notch.

I really like the 4 minute rule. We've worked around longer videos that are educational. I think currently, you are both on a break from the rule, but when you find a sense of 'normal' again, I would like to go back. The conciseness and density of information and ideas are what, for me, make Vlogbrothers videos special and the consistency has been great through the years. I consume a lot of media, and I love that I can always make time for these videos. (Obviously longer formats on your individual channels, totally okay and even welcomed.)

"You do not get to decide the notch situation"

I imagined the notches were along the dial of your response to the situations, no matter what level the situations were at. So even though life itself took it up many notches for you this year, that doesn't mean you can't try to take it down a notch and, I don't know, trust your years of practice to get you a good video without stressing too much about it... ...which leads to your question. I really appreciate all the work you two do to keep your videos (usually) short. As a viewer, 4-5 minutes is the perfect amount of time to take a break from whatever else I've got going on and watch a silly/heartwarming/thoughtful/informative/generous video. 10-15 minutes feels like a commitment reserved for Crash Course style informative videos, and much longer than that and we're in a situation where I could be catching up on my long list of TV shows instead if I'm going to make that kind of time commitment in that moment. On the other end of the spectrum, I don't watch Shorts, so really maybe you've just completely biased me but 4 minutes is the ideal average youtube video length imho.

I like longer videos because of an attention span thing- I come out feeling better after watching an uninterrupted twenty-minute video, which is better than a four-minute video, which is better than a sixty-second tiktok.

The 4 min limit meant that I always knew that I could watch the video without using too much of my time. Once I watched it, I never felt it was time wasted.

"The social response to the illness is part of what makes the illness so difficult" Thank you!!! I'm glad you have suspended the 4 minute rule for a few reasons. 1. You are giving people the opportunity to expand our attention span 2. More information is the AuDHD love language 3. It sets an example of flexibility, and makes Hank's health a priority without sacrificing an important outlet for both of you...while reducing the stress of said outlet (because cancer isn't known for creating more time to create shorter letters....or videos) So keep allowing the videos to be the length the videos need to be. Four minutes can be a guideline, but in times of uncontrollable notching, guidelines are more realistic when they are flexible.

I got some unfortunate health news that's devastating and permanent and I have returned to this video as my island in the ocean of uncertainty. You do not get to decide the notch level indeed.

"i wouldve written you a shorter letter..." was a favorite quote of my high school history teacher and its stuck with me since. i thought about it when i voted to abolish the 4 minute rule bc you guys have so much on your plates the least we could do is make vlogbrothers videos easier for you to create ❤
