Frances Havergal (1836-1879) penned this hymn in 1874.
In her own words, this is how the hymn came to be:
"Perhaps you will be interested to know the origin of the consecration hymn, “Take my life.” I went for a little visit of five days. There were ten persons in the house, some unconverted and long prayed for, some converted but not rejoicing Christians. He gave me the prayer, “Lord, give me all in this house!” And He just did! Before I left the house every one had got a blessing. The last night of my visit I was too happy to sleep, and passed most of the night in praise and renewal of my own consecration, and these little couplets formed themselves and chimed in my heart one after another, till they finished with, “Ever, ONLY, ALL for Thee!”
The hymn tune PATMOS was written earlier by her father, William Henry Havergal, in 1869 and was part of a collection Frances helped assembler after her father's death. Possibly she thought of this tune as she formed the stanzas of the hymn.
I open the tune with the Carillon stop, which is electronically simulated with multiple tones and sustain on the Great manual. One has to be careful not to hold the note, or the effect is spoiled. It's a neat opening to percussion effects in the analog organ era, while such effects would be digitally sampled now.
** About the organ **
This organ was installed June 15, 1965 as part of a new church building for the 2nd Baptist Church of Rochester, NY. It was a Custom build from Allen Organ in Macungie, Pennsylvania, with additional options for a Schulmerich Carillon system. It is a unit organ of seven electronic ranks, with the Great/Swell/Pedal sharing three tone generators, the Swell having a dedicated Celeste generator, and an independent Choir division of three tone generators, for a total of five audio output channels. A total of 570 oscillators generate all the sounds that are heard. A dedicated Choir Celeste generator awaits installation, which will bring the total up to 607 oscillators. The organ was dedicated in September, 1965 in a recital performed by Berj Zamkochian.
