Great Video: There's one thing these designers forget on a bandsaw fence, which is a clamp - lock - or something to secure the outfeed end of the fence which can flex a little even on the best design - especially if you have some kind of featherboard or power feed setup. I designed a quick easy clamp for mine which makes a big difference.

I don't usually have that issue at the bandsaw but I can definitely see how that might be an issue with a power feeder. On the table saw, I have a couple of magswitch magnets I use to help prevent any deflection. I bet those would work nicely at the bandsaw too.

I'd been trying to buy this since I saw your first video. As soon as I saw it hit the market I got it. As you pointed out, the installation was a breeze. (FYI...in the installation video, they show a bit of an easier calibration process. They suggest cutting in a couple inches or so into a flat board. I used a 4/4 jointed a planed piece of Maple offcut I had around. You leave the board in place after stopping the saw, and look at the position of the back of the blade. Your goal is to adjust the fence until the back of the blade is dead center in the kerf. You make an adjustment, move the fence over a bit, and make a new cut. It took me a few tries since I kept forgetting which direction to turn the adjustment wheel and kept undoing my last adjustment, but I got it dead on after about 6 or 7 cuts. It really does a good job. Your tips on workarounds for the "flaws" are great. Thanks! I've saved the video so I can reference it in the future.

That was without a doubt the worst woodworking purchase I've ever made and it's up there with the worst purchases of anything I ever made. I have the original one minus the mounting brackets. I called Laguna for a quote on them, and I think they were around $30 or so for a pair. I ended up making a plywood one. I still have it on my 14" cast iron frame band saw with a riser block. My band saw has a back rail for stock fence, so I made a sliding block on the far end of the fence to ride on the back rail. It does block the door, and it's a hassle to change blade or just simple cleaning. The new version looks very good. To solve the locking/square issue, consider a cam lever popylar on bycicle seat adjustment. Once you have the tightness dialed in, it's a cam lever action to lock and it's highly repeatable.

I would put 1 layer of UHMW tape on the surface of the bottom of the fence that slides on the bandsaw surface so it slides smooth, you can also buy wide plastic tape for the fence if its not slick enough. When the tape wears out just replace it. Its also known as Tuck Tape I used to use this on my printing press so the 1/4 folder would slide the blade out smoothly but it was used for several uses on a web feed printing press. Works great on tools to to stop friction.

Nice video. I wonder if anyone has the fence that comes with the BX|18 (as of last year) that also has a ruler and is very tall, has T-track, etc, but it rides on a tube with a twist knob to lock it instead of that rack & pinion setup. Also doesn't have the white knob for adjusting drift but instead you have to loosen a few screws with a hex wrench. Would be interesting to see people who upgrade and compare because the diff seems more convenience than functionality.

Great video! I have a Laguna bandsaw and while its fence is generally pretty good with the exception of flexing or movement when clamping it down. I am very interesting in getting this upgrade as it seems more precise. However, one thing I liked about the stock fence is that it has two heights: a short one for cutting horizontal boards and a vertical one for resawing veneer or reducing the depth of boards. As it is generally better to have the guide bearings as close to the wood as possible, does this fence also adjust for cutting boards that are flat on the table?

Marc, long time follower of yours. Just concerned why now you are touring how the drift need to be incorporated after all the time you spent with Alex Snodgrass tuning up your saw and "The need for not using one if it is tuned correctly. What is you take?
@woodwhisperer
13 күн бұрын
Not all saws can be calibrated using the Snodgrass method. He specifies you want the deepest part of the gullet in the center of the wheel and that just doesn't work on wider blades as it can either push part of the blade off the wheel or pushes the blade back so far that the rear thrust bearing can't accommodate that position. And most folks doing lots of resawing tend to have blades in that 3/4"+ size range, which means they can still benefit greatly from an easy drift adjustment. Alex also takes time to align the fence with the blade as one of the last steps, which requires you to tilt the fence so it's parallel with the blade. And that's an operation that would also benefit from an easy drift adjustment on the fence. In spite of the fact that this fence is called the Driftmaster and that's clearly a primary selling point, it's probably the thing on the feature list I care the least about. For me, it's all about having a nice tall 2-position fence and micro-adjustment.

One thing I recently learned on adjusting for drift on my Rikon is to make sure the roller guides are not touching the blade when you make the drift adjustment. I had some unexplained severe drift and to fix it I realized the rollers were also not parallel with the blade, so I used shims to fix that. Apparently, during a resaw the blade would twist causing the severe drift because the guides were not parallel with the blade. Something to check if you have unexplained severe drift. From checking Laguna’s website the Driftmaster fence is hi/low. Will have to add that to my consideration list. Thanks for the great review Marc!

For the move the fence resaw technique- seems like forget the backlash, forget the ruler. Setup for the first cut. Then clamps a block or use a MagSafe against the outside of the part about to be cut off. Cut, adjust fence with reduced thickness stock to the stop. Cut again. I wish I was a genius and invented this. But it is a well known technique, usually discussed for the tablesaw to cut off thing strips.

I looked at the manual online but couldn't figure it out - is there any way to do some lateral adjustment of the gear that engages the rack, or alternately adjust the position of the rack? It sounds like the pinion gear is too far from the rack, if you could move it closer (or move the rack outwards slightly), you might be able to take up some of that backlash. If the rack is mounted with oversize holes for example, it might be biased in the wrong direction.

I really only tested resawing so it wasn't an issue. The fence also has a low position for cuts where you'd want to bring the guides down.
