While I hate the “tea” angles in rap battles nowadays - Drake’s pop fan base started that! The man was exposed with ghostwriters/credited writers and nobody cared! So there’s no where else to go but to attack your integrity as a person cuz clearly the fans don’t care about your artistic integrity anymore.

Thats the problem. He tried to son Nas overestimating how he was viewed by sliding with one verse. He didnt want a larger battle because all the greasy, sucker shit a generation remembered was going to get thrown at him. Jay Z got super personal by alluding to that gross baby momma shit and thought that would box nas in and he wouldnt reply. It worked, that being outed back then is diff..... violation that'd be expected to be dealt with off wax - its why that truce was needeed. Was more than Jay's mom. That was for the public. Street dudes around them made them do that. Nas hesitated for months until the pressure built, people were writing his career off, and he released a revised version. First copy would've outed street shit. Takeover was bad for its intended purpose - it was to get Nas out of here.

It's ok to admit Nas was absolutely lost In the sauce late 90s heading into the new millenium. He wasn't sure if he wanted to be a jiggy rapper or an elite MC. You can't go from "Represent" and "I Gave You Power" hanging out with Wu and Mobb Deep, to talking about " Shorty u owe me" and " you won't see me tonight" and "K I S S I N G"😂 He had no clue where to take himself image wise before the beef started popping off.

Nobody felt Nas was on a downward spiral when the beef kicked off. Nas was seen as the ultimate legend, who survived through 2pac and Biggie. He was the Kendrick Lamar of that era.
@Cartsih

Takeover really examined the authenticity Nasir Jones, Nas, and the quality of his work. Even that verse is a great slight to Mobb Deep as the last line in the previous verse creates a sort of “I’ll beat your big brother too” feel as Nas was the golden child of the east. I think adidon was what created the expose diss thing that exists now. It’s hard to blame drake for thinking that he needed dirt to win with Kendrick as in his last feud, he arguably rapped better than push with duppy but the shock factor was what lost him the beef. Push barely came for the Drake musician character and only focused on Aubrey Graham.

Funny when Jay throw shots about Nas witnessing it from his folks pad yet he took Nas’ from the project window observations to create a song called “ Dead Presidents “ a line Nas wrote which helped Jay gain real traction. So apparently whatever Nas scribbled in his notepad influenced you and helped you eat! Jay was just salty lol which led to him getting personal after Ether. Pulling a Drake move which is a Jay Z “ Blueprint” ironic lol

Honestly if we're going to talk about straight lyrics without the catty stuff, I would say Dre vs Easy was better especially Easy. Dre and Snoop got Easy good in Dre Day. In Real Motherphukkin G's(The better song in my opinion), Easy went straight at Dre especially the line, "Dre Day only meant Easy's payday, all of a sudden Dr Dre is a G Thang but on his old album covers he was a she thang". Easy got Death Row again on "What would You do" even though it came out after his death. The line "In a game called 5 minutes of fame, you already wasted 4 minutes now you got seconds left", is classic..

Loving this video, but anyone who says or said back then that It Was Written was disappointing needs to have their ears checked. Nas was really falling off in I Am but it was still a cool album. That said, when Nastradamus dropped that was the all time low for the once "Illmatic" legend. So yes Jay-Z was at the peak of his powers while Nas was clearly at the lowest point in his career.

This isnt like family matters. Drake used other artists as filler, noone cares about the others. Drake isn't conceptual, his subject matter is shallow, and isnt creative as an MC. He can't weave narratives on a track with any depth. You get clever wordplay, bravado, but he cant drive an angle the way Kendrick can. Look he was cooked when he opened talking about contract splits. Kendricks image has nothing to do with contracts and flexing numbers. On takeover. Look Nas was still a huge figure in spite of those numbers. Alot of shit isnt said about Jay because of his place in the industry now. It used to be said. He'd done some hoe shit, alot of it, and takeover was him misunderstanding his own image. There was a degree of negative sentiment that made Jay vulnerable to ether. Numbers dont capture sentiment. Ether was Nas insulting someone who thought he could son everyone and was above it. As if he was who he is now. Pop shit and apologize landed HARD back then because everyone knew how Jay acted when confronted. Knew that Jay never stabbed anyone and would laugh about where that energy was on other occassions. People were still laughing about Hov and Pun. Hov is the GOAT. But alot has been erased because of his power.
