Had a chance to test drive an SR5 with a 6ft bed up here in Canada and honestly I encourage everyone to at least test these trucks out in-person before concluding your opinions. From all the review videos, I had the impression that the back seats were INSANELY tight and the 6ft bed was awkwardly disproportionate. I was pleasantly surprised that the 6ft bed looked perfectly fine in person. I’m also 6ft tall, I set the driver seat up as to how I would be driving comfortably then went to sit in the backseat and honestly it wasn’t remotely as bad as some other reviewers made it out to be. Yes it’s tighter than most SUV’s and Full sized trucks but it’s perfectly manageable especially for a midsized truck.

There is a lot to like with the new Tacoma. My budget will have me shopping for an SR5. I am OK with its functional, somewhat austere, interior. I want a truck for towing a small camper and hauling camping gear. But, I have a hard time justifying the cost of the bread and butter SR5 when I can more features and a more premium looking interior in other midsize trucks. What I am most disappointed in is the real world payload of the Tacomas. It is only marginally better than the previous generation. I assume a lightly optioned SR5 will have more payload than a TRD Sport/Offroad. But, 1200 lbs is unacceptable for my needs. My 2,900 lb camper has 400 lbs of tongue weight. I assume a camper shell/topper will weigh about 250 lbs. My wife and I weigh 350 lbs (on a good day). The hitch weighs 50 lbs. My dog weighs 15 lbs. Ummm, that leaves me 135 lbs for camping gear. Nope, just can’t do that. For that matter, I just looked at a Tundra SR5 (no options other than floor mats) and it only had 1,480 lbs of payload. Better, but not great for a 1/2 ton. I am a Toyota fan (but not brand loyal to any manufacturer), but I am disappointed in the payload that I am seeing on the new Tacomas. BTW, talked with a young guy last week driving a new GMC Canyon Elevation. I had him check his payload. LOL, he did not know it. Over 1,600 lbs in a midsize truck. NICE!
