I love it, that's what I learned to drive a school bus on a crown. I miss my days driving a crown and as a driver trainer.

I enjoy watching these videos. As a kid growning up in SoCal in the 70's and 80's I rode many a crown school bus and still see them crusing around.....thought not as much. This one has a 10 speed "road ranger" transmission which I've read is hard to find but a very good runner. Thanks again for the post.....I keep going back and forth about trying to find one. I'm sure it's a fun hobby but can also get pricey as well.

I'm a school bus driver myself, I wish we had buses with manual transmissions. But the state I live in doesn't allow them, it's considered a distraction.

I'm surprised he wasn't made to go through all 10 gears haha. I was at Harbor City Christian School as a bus driver in 1981. Left them and went to Associated out of the Harbor City yard driving a Ford Conventional (awful Caterpillar). We were shown what happens to a Crown transmission when you grind the gears, (the chips of all the teeth).

If you're using a 10 Speed Road Ranger, you really don't need to use the Clutch to shift up, or down. You only need it to start off with.... When you're getting ready to stop, just stick it in neutral, and coast to a stop, and use your brakes gently. Keep the RPM's down when going up through the gears, and listen to your engine, it will tell you when to shift. When down shifting, as you come out of the higher gear, and are going to a lower one, just as you come into neutral, lightly tap the throttle to bring up your RPM's just enough to allow it to slide into the next lower gear. It takes a little practice, and a good ear, but once you get the hang of it, you'll discover that the Road Ranger Transmission is actually designed to be shifted by Engine RPM's, without using the Clutch, and it will actually shift much easier, and faster. I tend to start in first gear, and just shift the bottom of the H pattern, 1st, 3rd, and 5th, then hit the higher range, and shift the entire pattern. I only use all 10 speeds if loaded heavy. Note that if you are traveling down grade to stop, then you can use your lower gears, along with your engine brake if so equipped, or gently apply the service brakes.

First thing he needs to do is STAY OFF THAT DAMN CLUTCH once he gets moving. Road Ranger Transmissions are designed to be shifted WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH. Start off in 2nd, and go strictly by RPM's of the Engine, pop it out of 2nd, and into 3rd, out of 3rd, into 4th, out of 4th into 5th, pull up the range selector button, and swing back over to where 1st would normally be, but is now 6th gear once you are in high range, then out of 6th into 7th, out of 7th into 8th, out of 8th into 9th, and finally, out of 9th into 10th. All shifts can be done by just listening to the engine RPM's, and popping the lever into the next gear when the engine RPM is just right, it's so easy, it will shift by itself with just your hand resting on the shift knob if done right.

what if you have to slow down? my bigest problem is trying to figure out what gear to down shift into, say i slow down from 65 to 25, what gear? i just end uo grinding, and having to come to a complete stop and starting all over agian.
@kevinswinyer3176

@@nn-dj2nu if the vehicle you are driving is equipped with a Jake Brake, activate it, trust me, it will slow your rig down quite quickly. The clutch in most large commercial vehicles is actually a clutch brake, and when you depress it all the way down to the floor when trying to shift, it changes everything, because it is actually slowing the truck down, causing the rpms to change, which will make it harder to shift when using the clutch, that's why you don't use it once you get the rig rolling.

@@kevinswinyer3176 if i need to slow down in a hurry, is it ok to just brake in nuetral, then find my gear when i need to get going agian, or should i be rowing the gears downshifting ?

@@nn-dj2nu No, you never ever want to slow down in just neutral, and only rely on your brakes to stop you, especially if you are heavily loaded, and coming down any kind of long grade. That is why you have so many gears. They help get you rolling, but they also help slow you down as well.
