Canadian Rockies was formed 65 to 35 million years ago due to collision of tectonic plates, when Paleozoic limestones which are 541 to 252 million years old, moved eastward over Mesozoic rocks which are 252 to 66 million years old. Another theory proposes that the Canadian Rockies was formed 100 million years ago when North American supercontinent Columbia moved westward, closed a ocean and collided with a micro continent.

About 88 species of dinosaurs were found in Canada, mostly in and around Rocky Mountain area. Sediment from ancient rivers flowing in this region provided ideal conditions and minerals to preserve the dinosaur fossils.
