Hi there, this video helped me tremendously with disassembling a 36 volt ebike battery built in similar fashion as this one. I searched for hours to find a proper video outlining what to look out for, and nothing I found was quite as good as your presentation. I just finished reducing my battery to the single battery modules and will be trying your roll method with needlenose to avoid contact. Thank you so much for this video.

Cool, I'm happy you liked it. Concerning the roll method: It works great when the spot welds aren't very strong. As you see in the video, I damage a lot of cells in this pack because they are very strong (think their laser-welded). I've since moved on to another method with these packs: I use a chisel (as you'd use for woodworking) and a hammer and chisel the strips away. This works very well.

@ I'm familiar with chisels, yes that's brilliant! Just finished taking apart a module, one small spark, but nothing serious. I found the welds were weak enough to simply pull upwards and they yanked off quite easily. The battery was rated at 36 volts, but was reading 41.5 , and was at that charge during this process, this raised my concern for safety. I'm going to finish up the rest tomorrow. For now I am going to experiment with building some small cell phone charger style battery banks with the 4 volt cells :)

Thanks for uploading this. I have 8,800 E-bike batteries to disassemble. 🤦🏽♂️

Wow, sounds like weeks of fun! 😉 Since I've filmed this, I have moved on to another method for packs that have strong connections like this one. You see in the video that I damage quite a lot of cells. Using a hammer and chisel has proven to be less damaging...

@ Easier but a more time consuming way: Cut the nickel strips off a slight bit around the spotwelds (like a mm or 2), bend the remainder of the nickel strips around the welds, then use the cutting pliers to cut the spotwelds open. Just put the pliers in between a pair of spotwelds, under the bend nickel strips and cut. The nickel strip usually comes flying off, but there's little to no damage to the cells. You don't want to put any strain on the cells themselves (no pulling or leveraging with the needle nose pliers, even your sideways bending can do some damage). It will prevent excessive bending and bump forming on the negative poles and the hole forming you mentioned. It does however take a bit more time...
