"Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
These are the words of the Takings Clause, found in the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution. This phrase, just like the rest of the supreme law of the United States of America, is vague, and intentionally so. Policymakers have long used the vague nature of this language to their advantage. Historically, this has enabled massive public policy blunders and, in some ways, made parts of the country worse places than they were before. However, the usage of eminent domain has not always resulted in disaster, and can be very useful in very specific circumstances. In this video, we will look at the history of the use and abuse of eminent domain, and explain why its use should be heavily curtailed.
